Western Ramapo Comp Plan Update

Ramapo held a public open house on Thursday evening, February 27, to give residents an opportunity to weigh in on updating its comprehensive plan for the unincorporated western portion of the Town, which includes the villages of Monsey and Hillcrest.ย

Thursday eveningโ€™s Open House did not draw a crowd, but those who did come in to talk to representatives of MJ Engineering in Clifton Park, the projectโ€™s lead team, were able to write their concerns/questions down for the planners to convey to the Town Board.ย  Among residentsโ€™ comments, which were on post-it notes on a board, were traffic concerns, housing availability for all and a desire to see the area retain its rural character.

There has already been significant pushback from the community over the development of the townโ€™s western portion. During November 2024 public hearing on Planned Unit Development (PUDs), which could include single-family homes, townhomes, apartments and retail outlets, depending on the size of the acreage. Dozens of residents packed the town hall to ask its Board if the housing planned for western Ramapo will be fair and equitable for all. Particularly for young families and seniors.ย  During that public hearing, CUPONโ€™s Michael Miller spoke at length and let Supervisor Michael Specht and the Board know that โ€œWe are all for responsible developmentโ€ฆbut the town needs to force developers to comply.โ€

Another open house will be held, although a date was not announced at press time. For more information on the Town of Ramapoโ€™s proposed update to its Comprehensive Plan, go to the town website, www.ramapo.org. ย
