As County Executive, I have the distinct honor of recognizing some of the most dedicated and selfless individuals in our community—those who have served our nation with unwavering courage and commitment. This year, at our annual Freedom Award presentation, we came together to celebrate one such hero: Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Elizabeth “Lisa” Rubio.
Lisa is the embodiment of service and sacrifice. From 2011 to 2019, she served with distinction in the U.S. Marine Corps, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Over the course of her career, she took on critical leadership roles within Marine Corps Recruiting Command and U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, ensuring the readiness and success of her fellow Marines.
Her dedication extended far beyond the battlefield. As a mentor and leader, she guided recruits, supported multinational training exercises, and earned multiple commendations, including two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals—a reflection of her exceptional service and commitment to excellence.
But what truly sets Lisa apart is that her service didn’t end when she left the military. She carried that same passion and sense of duty into her work as a Veterans Service Officer here in Rockland County, securing an incredible $12 million in benefits for local veterans and surviving spouses. She has been a fierce advocate for those who served, ensuring they receive the support and recognition they deserve.
And she isn’t stopping there. Lisa is now pursuing a law degree, furthering her ability to serve and uplift those around her. Her relentless drive and commitment to making a difference are nothing short of inspiring.
It takes a remarkable person to answer the call to serve, to put their own life on hold for the sake of our nation. Lisa Rubio is one of those extraordinary individuals. Because of heroes like her, we continue to stand strong as a nation built on courage, sacrifice, and unwavering resolve.
As we honor Lisa, I also want to take a moment to recognize all the brave women—and all who have served—whose sacrifices ensure that the light of freedom continues to shine across this great nation.
Lisa, on behalf of a grateful community and country—thank you.
