Each spring families of ospreys build their nests on a tower overlooking the Bear Mountain Bridge.
In past years, large sticks and branches fell onto the deck below causing hazardous driving conditions for vehicles traversing the span from Putnam and Westchester into Orange and Rockland counties.
The New York State Bridge Authority commended the bridgeโs maintenance crew this week consisting of Scott, Darius, Chris, and Steve for fabricating an Osprey nest on top of the bridge.
The authority noted, โPreviously bridge staff was forced to climb up and dismantle the nest if eggs had not been laid. Our maintenance manager came up with an idea to compromise with nature and now the group of determined birds has gotten a safe place to nest thanks to the maintenance staff, who built a custom osprey nest platform that prevents debris from falling onto the roadway below.โ
