All in With John Jastremski
Since the start of 2025, some Mets fans and media members have shifted their attention to another big star about to hit the free agent market: Vlad Guerrero Jr.
Yes, the Mets in January were dealing with the daily Pete Alonso update and at the time his status was very much up in the air.
It led to a segment of fans and yes some members of the media suggesting the Mets abandon Alonso and focus on signing the Toronto Blue Jays slugger in the winter of 2025.
Fast forward to April, Pete Alonso was brought back to Queens, but on a short term deal.
Guerrero and the Blue Jays happened to open the Citi Field season and of course the rumors once again perked up.
Considering the Mets have Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor locked up to massive long term contracts, I was never in the camp of handing another one out to Guererro.
Especially considering that the Mets have a slugger of their own that can do the job at first base. Pete Alonso!
Thankfully, there will be no choice for the Mets this offseason.
On Sunday, Guerrerro and the Blue Jays agreed to terms on a 500 plus million dollar contract extension.
Vlad Jr. can be the official face of the Jays franchise for years to come. Great!
This should not concern the Mets in the least, they have one of the best sluggers in the game patrolling first base.
Pete Alonso is poised for a monster 2025 season. He gets to hit in front of Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto all season, which should lead to a whole lot of RBI’s.
The first two weeks of the season have featured a way more at ease and comfortable Pete Alonso.
It does not seem that he’s carrying the same burden of contract pressure that was noticeable for most of 2024.
Alonso may be way better positioned to hit free agency at the end of this season, but the feelings from the Met organization should be different this time around.
After all, love the one you’re with right?
