DOCCS to Resume Inmate Intake

The State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) has notified County Sheriffโ€™s Offices that the state prison system will start accepting inmates and parole violators again on Monday, May 5th.

Transfers of inmates were halted on February 17th when state correction officers staged a wildcat strike, a work stoppage unapproved by a labor union, at more than 40 state prisons. The date to resume inmate transfers kept getting pushed back as the strike progressed. When the strike ended, the prison system could still not accept new inmates due to a staffing shortage caused by Governor Kathy Hochulโ€™s termination of 2,000 correction officers. The intake of female inmates resumed on April 14th, but male inmates were on hold until DOCCS Deputy Commissioner Anne Marie McGrath announced on Thursday that the state would begin accepting 75 to 100 incarcerated persons per week.
