Dominican Sisters Host 28th Golf Fundraiser

A total of 92 golfers were out on Monday the 19th golfing for a cause. According to Bernadette Donahue, many of the golfers were returned players, speaking to the heartstrings tied to this event. However, there were at least three new foursomes taking on the course, and as they near their 30th year of the fundraisers the sisters can’t wait to keep growing the fun.

The full day of fun began with a 10:00 a.m. registration, a BBQ lunch at 11:30 a.m. and a Shotgun style start to the golfing at 12:30 p.m. The day was rounded out with a Gala and raffle baskets beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Blue Hill Golf Course was kind enough to lend a golf cart to the RCT so we could drive around the course and speak with the golfers. Thankfully, Rockland decided to bless the day with what feels like a rare sunny spring day – of course, with this being a fundraiser for the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, it’s highly likely a higher power was at play here.

“We have so many sins on our souls, that this is a nice way to bleach them,” quipped one golfer, his buddies chuckling behind him.

If one looked deeper, beyond the wisecracks of golfers being interrupted in the middle of their golf game by a reporter, it became obvious there was a red thread running between each golfer I spoke to – a love for the sisters and their work with the youth. Each golfer displayed a tenderness towards the sisters, and a desire to make their retirements and efforts towards the Dominican mission as peaceful as possible.

Dominican sisters have a strong passion for justice and a reverence for all creation. To learn more about the Dominican sisters or to learn how to donate your time or funds, go to sparkill.org/how-you-can-help/.

This Week’s Favorites

What I’m Reading

The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang has got me in a chokehold. Kuang’s mastery over language and her ability to transport you to another world is second to none.

This story follows Rin, a dark-skinned war orphan from the southern part of the Empire. Rin passes the Empire’s nationwide exam and tests into the top military school, where she is ruthlessly bullied for her skin, her impoverished upbringing, and being one of only three girls in her class. However, there is something simmering beneath the surface that no one could have predicted.

Rin’s determination is awe inspiring. Kuang does not spoon feed her readers – she expects you to be just as involved as Rin. It’s exactly what I want when reading a novel. It’s as much up to me to determine my feelings surrounding the Rin’s life as it is for her.

I may only be a little over 300 pages into the trilogy at time of publication, but I have a feeling this may become one of my favorites of 2025. The political intrigue, the character development, the fresh religious ideas – it’s safe to say Kuang’s got me hook, line and sinker!

What I’m Watching

I have recently stumbled upon a singer who goes by 54 Ultra and I have tripped and fallen in love with his blend of Spanish and English music. He has undeniable flow and the ease with which he switches between the two languages is enchanting.

The vintage style Ultra 54 has infused his songs with makes you wish for a time gone by. He manages to have this sound without any pretense or “playing at” being vintage – he simply IS.

For those taking a first go at his music, I must recommend Heavens Knows and No Tengo Valor for a swoon-worthy weekend listen.

What I’m Loving

A Matter of Health in Nanuet has become my go-to for a fresh, delicious lunch on the run. They’ve got huge salads at reasonable prices, and a wide variety of fun drinks including canned boba, yerba mate, kombucha, canned coffee, and probiotic soda. Need something with a little more variety? They’ve got a self serve small buffet bar with hot food and salads that change on the daily. They’ve got an option for every dietary restriction, including gluten free desserts, vegan options, and my favorite – plantains!

What I’m Watching

Like most Pedro Pascal fans, I’ve been greedily consuming each new episode of The Last of Us every Sunday. While Episode 2 was one of the most powerful episodes of television I have watched (and trust me, I’ve watched a lot of television) I have found the succeeding episodes struggle to keep up the momentum.

As someone who did not play the video game, I have been enjoying getting to see more of this apocalyptic world and seeing the relationship blossom between Ellie and Dina. Such a complex story following two LGBTQ+ individuals is a breath of fresh air, especially when I find that many LGBTQ+ characters tend to be killed off, and QUICKLY.

I’ve enjoyed seeing the parallels between Abby and Ellie and how the cycle of violence continues, but at the same time I wonder if I would have come to that conclusion without the aid of my TLoU-obsessed friend.

I will say one thing – if we have to see another moody shot of Ellie playing the guitar while wistfully looking into the distance, I will be unable to stop my eyes from rolling.

NYACK: Rockland Symphony Orchestra, Rising Stars Concert

The Rockland Symphony Orchestra is pleased to invite audience members to our closing concert of the year for our 2024 – 2025 season. We will present several pieces including two concerto movements performed by last year’s winners of the Rockland County Music Teacher’s Guild (RCMTG) Concerto Competition. We will also perform large orchestral works by Dvorak and Rossini, all under the baton of Conductor and Music Director Nicole Peragine.

Opening the concert is Rossini’s Overture to Barber of Seville – one of the best loved operas in the repertory, followed by Camille Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2, 3rd movement in G minor – the closing Presto movement, performed by RCMTG Concerto Competition winner pianist Evan Wang. The third piece on the program is Sibelius’s Violin Concerto Op. 17, 1st movement – Allegro Moderato, performed by the RCMTG Concerto Competition winner violinist Lukas Witek.

There will be a short intermission followed by the final piece on the RSO’s program, Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor Op. 95 “From the New World”. This great and final Dvorak symphony, written in celebration of his years living and working in the U.S., alludes throughout its four movements to the music he encountered in such diverse locales as New York City and Spillville, Iowa, during his late 19th century sojourn here.

This event will take place June 1st , beginning at 4:00 p.m. To purchase tickets online, please visit www.rocklandsymphony.org or purchase tickets at the door. We look forward to seeing you at our Rising Stars Concert. The Angel 18 S. Broadway, Nyack, N.Y. 10960

SUFFERN: Suffern Free Library, Despair & Hope

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, local author Mitch Rosen will talk about his memoir, Columbus Day. What began as an exciting new chapter—moving to a new home in Howard Beach, Queens—soon turned into a nightmare. In a haunting narrative set against a backdrop of cruelty and despair, a mother’s twisted plan alters the course of her young son’s life forever. Driven by her own need to escape her burdens, she devises a disturbing scheme: to have her son institutionalized. Meanwhile, his father, well aware of her deteriorating mental state, chooses the path of passivity, allowing her heartless plan to succeed.  This is not only a story of a mother’s betrayal but also a powerful testament to a child’s extraordinary resilience. Despite the horrors within the walls of the institution, he refuses to succumb to despair. He finds the strength to overcome the chaos and subsequently thrive. Come meet Mitch Rosen, hear his story and ask questions. Books will be available for purchase and are available on Amazon. Registration is NOT required, but always preferred. Boulders Expanding Broadcast Coverage

The New York Boulders announced this morning that, starting with tonight’s game in Québec, all of the team’s remaining regular season and playoff games — home and away — will be streamed live.

This means the Boulders are adding their remaining 45 regular season road games to the broadcast schedule, with live and on-demand video available on Frontier League TV, powered by HomeTeamLive and the HomeTeam Network.

The expanded slate kicks off with this evening’s 7pm EDT start against the three-time defending champion Capitales and can be accessed by clicking or tapping the “away” feed at app.hometeamlive.com.

Lead play-by-play announcer Marc Ernay said “This has been a long time coming for our passionate Boulders fan base and, thanks to the accessibility afforded by our new streaming partners, finally becomes a reality tonight.”

Seth Cantor, the Boulders’ Director of Corporate Partnerships, added “Boulders fans are among the most passionate and knowledgeable in professional baseball and we’re thrilled that we can now provide them true wall-to-wall coverage throughout the season with this engaging, new platform — HTN. This is also a terrific opportunity to provide even greater value and exposure to our loyal corporate partners!”
