As Washington lawmakers look for ways to cut unnecessary spending, NYS Senator Charles Schumer has been traveling around the region decrying cuts to local food pantries. He visited the Regional Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, where he was joined by local farmers and civic leaders. Schumer hopes to create a coalition to block the $300 billion cut being proposed for the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) by DOGE, President Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency. According to FBofHV, food banks across the country have already seen $1 billion in cuts because of the reduction in federal support.
“It’s so unpopular with the American people, with people here in the Hudson Valley, and it’s unfair,” said the former Senate Majority leader, saying more people are relying on local food pantries because they cannot afford food, “It’s been devastating.”
Schumer’s stop at the Food Bank was just one of many of he plans across the state to protest cuts. The Newburgh location he visited this week expects to serve more than 100,000 people this year, up from 49,000 since 2020.
