NYACK: Rockland Symphony Orchestra, Rising Stars Concert

The Rockland Symphony Orchestra is pleased to invite audience members to our closing concert of the year for our 2024 – 2025 season. We will present several pieces including two concerto movements performed by last year’s winners of the Rockland County Music Teacher’s Guild (RCMTG) Concerto Competition. We will also perform large orchestral works by Dvorak and Rossini, all under the baton of Conductor and Music Director Nicole Peragine.

Opening the concert is Rossini’s Overture to Barber of Seville – one of the best loved operas in the repertory, followed by Camille Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2, 3rd movement in G minor – the closing Presto movement, performed by RCMTG Concerto Competition winner pianist Evan Wang. The third piece on the program is Sibelius’s Violin Concerto Op. 17, 1st movement – Allegro Moderato, performed by the RCMTG Concerto Competition winner violinist Lukas Witek.

There will be a short intermission followed by the final piece on the RSO’s program, Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor Op. 95 “From the New World”. This great and final Dvorak symphony, written in celebration of his years living and working in the U.S., alludes throughout its four movements to the music he encountered in such diverse locales as New York City and Spillville, Iowa, during his late 19th century sojourn here.

This event will take place June 1st , beginning at 4:00 p.m. To purchase tickets online, please visit www.rocklandsymphony.org or purchase tickets at the door. We look forward to seeing you at our Rising Stars Concert. The Angel 18 S. Broadway, Nyack, N.Y. 10960

This Week’s Favorites

What I’m Reading

This past week I finished How High We Go In the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu on audiobook through the app Libby. I knew next to nothing going into this story, and it tore my heart out and stomped on it. How High We Go in the Dark is a collection of catastrophically human short stories, each one tied with a red thread to the next. It was an unflinching look at human’s connection to the past, present, and future, and our need for meaning and community in every circumstance.

If you had told me this was a climate pandemic story, I would not have picked it up. Having lived through my own pandemic, I find myself not needing to experience any more, thank you very much. However, Nagamatsu’s writing simply stole me away and before I knew it I was finishing the novel. I highly recommend listening on audiobook as each story has a distinct narrator, a choice I find heightened my experience.

What I’m Listening To

Listen – I know I’m late to the Sade train. This British-Nigerian singer songwriter shot to fame in the 1980s, but was only recently recommended to me by my Spotify and I just cannot get enough. I had of course heard Smooth Operator because I don’t live completely under a rock, but I’ve got a few of my own favorites getting some airtime on my morning commute. My top played have included In Another Time, Paradise, and Lovers Rock. If you’re also late to the Sade fandom and aren’t sure what to expect, give her a listen if you love a voice as smooth as a glass of whisky, relaxing jazz-esque beats, and early 90s lyrics.

What I’m Loving

Thank you to Retro Fitness in Tappan and Pearl River for providing such a clean, well maintained gym at a reasonable price. I actually enjoy going to the gym here, and appreciate the relaxed atmosphere and friendly employees.

What I’m Watching

The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is one of those shows that makes you appreciate your “boring” life. For me, this is the key element to a perfect reality show. It also makes you wonder why people ever decide to be involved in a reality show. Pro-tip for anyone in a relationship – don’t invite everyone with a Hulu account to be a part of your relationship. Maybe I shouldn’t talk, however, when I currently leap at any chance to flip it on. C’est la vie, I suppose!
