Watch out for Rocklandโs Shell-ebrities!
A four legged pedestrian will be taking to the streets for their annual nesting ritual taking place from May to June. With this in mind, please drive carefully and slowly down Western Highway between Theis Road and OโSullivanโs Tree Service. The Turtles of Western Highway need you! Here are some tips to help the slowest friends of Rockland.
*Use Route 303 instead of Western Highway
*If you see a mama turtle – stop and allow for her to cross!
*If you absolutely must move a turtle, hold them at both sides at the back of their shell, and point them in the direction they were heading. DO NOT pick them up by their tail as this can cause spine damage
*Do not collect the turtles for food – they contain levels of pesticides dangerous for humans
*Share the news with your friends
*Get involved – please call Jane Murphy at 914-772-6164 to learn more or go to The turtles of Western Highway Facebook page.
The Common Snapping Turtle is the official State Reptile of New York – letโs protect her!
