A Hometown Lawyer

For 28 years, attorney Paul Cooper has guided clients through some of the most difficult periods of their lives. An attorney at the Silk Cooper Law Firm in New City, Mr. Cooper has dedicated much of his Practice to family law, matrimonial law, and criminal law.

Mr. Cooper has extensive experience taking on divorce cases, child custody cases, child support cases, and integrated domestic violence cases. His repertoire of experience also includes bankruptcy and foreclosure cases. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Buffalo and went on to receive his law degree from the Jacob Fuchsberg Law Center at Touro College. Since launching his legal career in May 1997, heโ€™s built a reputation as a reliable and strategic advocate for clients across Rockland County.

Mr. Cooper believes preparation is key to winning cases, and says that clients who follow his advice typically see positive results. โ€œIf my clientโ€™s willing to do what I say, I usually win the case,โ€ he said. โ€œItโ€™s because I know what the court wants to see.โ€

Whether helping a parent fight for custody or guiding someone through financial recovery, Cooperโ€™s goal is always the same: to get the best possible outcome for the people who rely on him. โ€œI care about the outcomes of the cases,โ€ he emphasized โ€“ and he takes the outcomes personally.

In child custody cases, Cooper emphasizes the importance of preparation and creating a stable home environment for a child. He explains, โ€œThe biggest factor in custody cases is a stable environment for the child to thrive. And in some cases, people just want to fight back and forth, saying, โ€˜he did this,โ€™ โ€˜she did thatโ€™โ€ฆ The judge is going to care who has a bedroom for the kid to live in, whoโ€™s home to check the kidsโ€™ schoolwork, and who shows up at the PTA meetings?โ€ After decades in the courtroom, the attorney understands what judges want to see and uses that knowledge to help clients improve their standing before the court.

For those dealing with or at risk for bankruptcy, he urges seeking early legal intervention. โ€œTalk to your lawyer now, before youโ€™re dealing with the problem later,โ€ he said. Cooper argues that the rise of automation will likely harm the job market, leaving many people more vulnerable to bankruptcy than they realize.
