Sparkle Bookstore Announces Opening Date
A new shop is set to open in Sparkill in Mid-July, bringing a family-owned independent bookstore to Rockland County.
The Sparkle Bookstore, a new independent bookshop, is thrilled to announce its grand opening, set for Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 642 Main St., Sparkill, NY, 10976.
The store will offer a curated selection of books, plus a selection of sandwiches and cold drinks. Store hours are set for Thursday through Sunday, 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
To celebrate their opening weekend, The Sparkle Bookstore will be hosting local authors on July 19th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., offering a chance for visitors to meet with and purchase books by writers from the area. Saturday’s event schedule will include local novelists Ellen Rockmore and Suzanne Uttaro Samuels; memoirists Lorraine Ash and Joanne Flynn Black; Poet Laureate of Rockland Juan Pablo Mobili; and poet Rebecca Watkins, recently featured in the Rockland County Business Journal. The authors will have books available for sale at the event.
The Sparkle is the spiritual successor of sorts of a previous business run by Donna Miele, a longtime Rockland resident, who with her family previously ran Cuppa Pulp Writers Space in Nanuet, NY, which also sold books to support the writing craft and hosted author events. After its closure in 2020 due to COVID, Donna also was diagnosed with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease. The impulse to support community spaces in the wake of the pandemic, plus relief from lupus symptoms energized Donna with husband and business partner Ken Herndon, decided the time was right to return to bookselling, with the goal of amplifying diverse voices and stories centering wellness alongside the best of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. The couple’s son Armand joins as the store manager.
While The Sparkle Bookstore prepares the store for opening, feel free to shop through their portals at Bookshop.org and Libro.fm. Keep checking their blog for updates on the launch, or sign up for email updates from their website: sparklebooks.store/.
About Sparkle Bookstore
The Sparkle Bookstore is a family-owned and operated independent bookstore dedicated to being a welcoming, inclusive space with a sparkle of community flair. We bring readers the best and most beloved of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, along with our own celebration of diverse books and stories centering wellness.
Happy Canada Day, Indeed!
The New York Boulders are proud to announce that the Toronto Blue Jays have purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Mason Olson.
The 23-year-old starter from Spanish Fork, UT, is the second Boulder this season to be grabbed up by an MLB franchise, joining fellow southpaw PJ Labriola — who was signed in mid-May by the Boston Red Sox.
Olson, in his first professional season out of Brigham Young University, was 3-0 in eight appearances (seven starts) with the red, white, and blue, pitching to an earned run average of 2.57 over 42 innings, striking out 42, and holding opposing to hitters to a batting average of .217.
He was named Frontier League Pitcher of the Week for June 9-15, after pitching the best nine-inning complete game in Boulders history on June 10th. Olson gave up just one hit and a walk to the first place Sussex County Miners, throwing only 89 pitches while facing the minimum 27 batters.
Aztec Two-Step 2.0 To Play The Turning Point
Aztec Two-Step 2.0 brings its spirited folk-rock sound to The Turning Point (468 Piermont Avenue, Piermont, NY, 845-359-1089, piermont.club) on Saturday, July 19. Tickets for the 8 p.m. concert, priced at $40, may be purchased at the box office or online via https://piermont.club/product/aztec-two-step-2-0/.
The story of Aztec Two-Step (aztectwostep.com) is intertwined with the history of folk-rock music in America. The duo recorded four albums on Elektra & RCA Records and helped to usher the music of the 1960s into the 1970s and beyond -performing worldwide, appearing on numerous national radio and TV shows, and drawing critical acclaim in major U.S. newspapers. Its career was built on progressive FM & college radio and non-stop touring over five decades.
Following Neal Shulman’s retirement in 2018, and the duo’s induction into the New England Music Hall of Fame, co-founder Rex Fowler continues to expand Aztec Two-Step’s musical legacy alongside his wife Dodie Pettit, an accomplished singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who was an original cast member of Broadway’s The Phantom of the Opera. Now, as Aztec Two-Step 2.0, Rex and Dodie, joined by multi-instrumentalist Steven Roues and percussionist Peter Hohmeister, have been impressing audiences by recapturing the multi-layered dimension of Rex and Neal’s original studio recordings while performing the band’s fan favorites and forgotten gems.
