Senator Bill Weber (R, Nanuet), joined by Rockland Town Supervisors, and Stephanie Dunn Ashley, CEO of the American Red Cross Metro New York North Chapter, officially launched the second annual Five Towns of Rockland Blood Drive Challenge on Monday at Orangetown Town Hall.
The challenge, which runs through Friday, unites the towns of Clarkstown, Haverstraw, Orangetown, Ramapo, and Stony Point in a friendly competition to address the critical summer blood shortage. Trophies will be awarded at the end of the campaign for the most blood donations collected and the most first-time donors.
Last year’s drive resulted in 111 units of blood and welcomed 64 first-time donors, with Clarkstown taking home both trophies. This year, all five towns return with renewed enthusiasm to surpass those numbers and rally their residents to give back.
“When I learned that only three percent of Americans donate blood—even though each donation can save up to three lives—I knew we needed to do more,” Senator Weber said. “That’s how the Five Towns of Rockland Blood Drive Challenge was born. With the help of the Red Cross and our incredible partners in local government, we’ve created a friendly competition that inspires real action. Every unit of blood collected is a potential three lives saved—and that’s something we can all be proud of.”
To kick off the event, the Governor Mario Cuomo Bridge was illuminated in red on Monday night.
