Dear Editor,
As Haverstraw residents raising our young family, we are grateful for Congressman Lawler’s commitment to restoring the SALT deduction in the One Big Beautiful Bill. For homeowners like us, the increase to a $40,000 SALT deduction directly eases the burden of high property taxes, making our monthly expenses more manageable.
The increase in the Child Tax Credit from $2,000 to $2,200 per child will also provide significant help. Between childcare costs and property taxes, every bit of savings helps our family stay in the community we love without the pressure of having to choose between financial stability and providing a good life for our kids.
Congressman Lawler promised to stand up for families like ours, and he delivered. We sincerely thank him for putting our family’s needs first.

Dear Editor
The Kohberger courtroom sentencing scene was a trainwreck that exposed America’s extreme ignorance of history.
Our wise ancestors would never have tolerated such an unjust plea deal. In fact, plea bargaining was outlawed at times and in parts of America because it lacked a sufficient deterrent effect.
The twisted pleasure Kohberger got out of killing four innocent college students earned him a sentence of free room and board for the rest of his life.
You could see in his eyes at court that he was laughing inside at how easy he got off.
Our Bible specifies an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, and a life for a life for a reason. We no longer seem to understand why proportionate justice is necessary for establishing domestic tranquility in the community.
The emotional testimony and sermonizing of relatives will not stop mass murders from continuing to explode in America.
A sentence of four lifetimes in prison without parole is beyond silly. The judge might have dished out 40 lifetime sentences, and still not gotten anywhere near to justice.
America does not need symbolism, America needs justice.

Dear Editor,
We continue to read about devastation from wildfires and strong storms. Climate scientists say we will see more as a result of climate change.
To reduce air pollution that causes climate change we must reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Senator Lindsey Graham said, “CO2 emissions generated by man is creating our greenhouse gas effect that traps heat, and the planet is warming.”
Our government needs to do much more to promote clean energy, such as wind, solar, and geothermal, and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. This includes restoring tax credits for clean energy–not reducing them.
I encourage readers to email their U.S. Senators and Representative. Joining Citizens’ Climate Lobby and similar groups is another great way to fight climate change.
Make earth great again. There is no planet B. When our grandchildren ask what we did about climate change, let’s have an answer.
Sincerely,
Gary Jump
