Orangetown

TAPPAN: Tappan Free Library, Prohibition / Speakeasies in NYC

A century ago, the 18th Amendment was passed which prohibited the ‘manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes’ – for 13 years! During this zoom tour we will explore the dynamics that led to this most unusual law and the most interesting ways in which people dealt with it or worked round it. Since this time also fell into the Great Depression, people had to get quite creative to have a grand time, which many of them definitely did – it is also the roaring 20s and the Jazz age! How did people get their drinks? How did breweries survive? Where were all these speakeasies in NYC and which ones survive? Which are the coolest new bars inspired by that time? How are the Mafia, Nascar and #86 connected? AND how did it finally end?! It is an intriguing story for sure! Registration required. The Montefiore Nyack Hospital Foundation has partnered with the Nyack Chamber of Commerce to support breast cancer awareness at the Chamber’s annual Exotic Car Show that takes place on Thursday, August 7, 2025 (Rain Date August 14).

The event kicks off with a parade of spectacular automobiles, each escorting a breast cancer survivor to the event. Donned in pink accessories, these courageous survivors will begin their ceremonial car ride at 5:00 pm, departing Montefiore Nyack Hospital to proceed down Midland Avenue to Main Street, before entering the show area in downtown Nyack.

Visitors to the show will delight in hundreds of examples of automotive art and engineering from around the world, including a vintage Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster, a wide variety of rare and exotic Porsches, and late-model Ferraris and McLarens.

The Montefiore Nyack Hospital Foundation will be in attendance, sharing information about breast cancer awareness and their upcoming event, Rides and Strides, to benefit breast cancer services at the hospital.
