The New City II Senior Club had the incredible honor of celebrating not one, but two centenarians in our community! Please join us in wishing a very happy 100th birthday to Iris Quinones and Ray Botto! Town officials were happy to mark this milestone with food, cake, music, stories, and lots of smiles. Here’s to Iris and Ray — thank you for inspiring us all and reminding us that age is just a number when your heart is young. Special thanks to all the senior club members who helped coordinate the celebration and opera singer Anna Veleva for the beautiful songs!

RCC Budget Approved

Rockland County legislators voted unanimously to adopt the 2025-2026 Rockland Community College (RCC) budget, nearly a third of which is supported by county taxpayer dollars.

The plan was previously completed by the Rockland Community College administration and approved unanimously by the college’s Board of Trustees. The County Executive reviewed the plan and recommended county government’s contribution, in accordance with state requirements. As the college’s local sponsor, the county generally provides about one-third of its budget, amounting to about $18 million in the coming fiscal year.

Under the approved spending plan, Rockland Community College’s budget will increase by just 0.2 percent to $61.85 million. No additional employees are included in the budget, which also maintains a $1.5 million fund balance per SUNY’s Budget Office. A fund balance allows for funds to pay for unexpected expenses and can aid cash-flow.

Tuition rates will remain flat. The budget estimates 3,661 full-time equivalent students, slightly under the 3,680 full-time students in the current fiscal year. The college is focused on increasing enrollment.

The tuition rate places RCC 12th among the 31 SUNY community colleges and in line with regional community colleges while being slightly below the average tuition cost of all community colleges.

“The legislators all agree that RCC is a vital institution serving the educational needs of so many,” Rockland County Legislature Chairman Jay Hood Jr. said. “We are hopeful that moving forward and with new leadership, the college will stabilize and improve its finances and grow its enrollment.”

Healthcare Workers Strike at Rockland Pulmonary

1199SEIU union members sound the alarm on low pay and unaffordable benefits as union files charges against WMCHealth.

Dozens of frontline care providers and support staff at Rockland Pulmonary went on strike on August 12 to demand fair pay, better benefits, and an end to alleged worker intimidation. The strike comes in response to multiple charges filed by Rockland Pulmonary workers’ union 1199SEIU, alleging that management violated federal labor law in negotiations.

Rockland Pulmonary is part of the WMCHealth network, the nonprofit healthcare system headquartered in Valhalla, NY, with 12,000 workers across nine hospitals and dozens of specialty practices, as well as skilled nursing, home care, and mental health operations.

Workers at Rockland Pulmonary have been at the bargaining table for eight months with WMCHealth management fighting for a fair first contract and have faced intimidation and delay tactics from management.

Many workers headed out on strike to demand an end to unlawful tactics by management, including threatening to close their offices, refusing to bargain in good faith, and inviting workers to quit if they didn’t like it. Workers are calling for fair wage increases and the same health insurance and pension benefits other union workers at other WMCHealth network facilities have.

Elected and community leaders who attended the strike included, Beth Davidson, Rockland County Legislator, candidate for Congress (CD-17), Aney Paul, Rockland County Legislator, John Sullivan, candidate for Congress (CD-17)and a representative from Assemblymember Patrick J. Carrol’s office.
