The County Executive’s Corner: The Next Generation of Correction Officers

As someone who has devoted more than three decades of my life to law enforcement, I know firsthand the dedication, discipline, and integrity it takes to wear the badge. My career began as a Patrol Officer with the NYPD, where I worked my way up to Lieutenant-Commander of Detectives. Later, I served as Baltimore’s Chief of Detectives, overseeing executive command and the responsibility of the 3,200 member force. I have been fortunate to work alongside some of the finest professionals in law enforcement, and I understand just how vital each role in the system is — including our Correction Officers.

Rockland County Correction Officers serve on the front lines of our justice system. Their responsibilities go far beyond maintaining safety and security within the correctional facility. They manage individuals during one of the most challenging times in their lives, enforce rules and procedures, respond to emergencies, and ensure everyone — staff and inmates alike — are treated with fairness and respect. This is not an easy job, but it is a critically important one.

If you have ever thought about a career in public service, this could be your moment. The Rockland County Correction Officer exam is coming up, and the application deadline is Friday, August 22nd. Passing the written exam is just one part of the process — you must also be prepared for the physical agility test, which measures the stamina, strength, and quick thinking this position requires. I encourage anyone interested to start training now so you can bring your best on test day.

A career as a Correction Officer offers stability, excellent benefits, and, most importantly, the chance to make a meaningful impact on your community. Every day, you will work as part of a dedicated team committed to public safety and to upholding the values that keep our county strong.

If you have the drive, the discipline, and the heart for service, I encourage you to take that first step. It could be the beginning of a challenging, rewarding, and honorable career, and one I know from personal experience can change your life.
