September Begins Hispanic Heritage Month
Each year, from September 15 to October 15, we come together to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month — a time to recognize the countless contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to our nation and our communities. Here in Rockland County, this celebration holds special meaning, as so many of our friends, neighbors, and colleagues proudly trace their roots to Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, and beyond.
When I reflect on Hispanic Heritage Month, I think about how the strength of Rockland lies in our diversity. Hispanic culture has enriched our county in countless ways — through food, music, art, language, and traditions that have become woven into our shared community fabric. But beyond cultural celebrations, Hispanic and Latino residents have made a profound impact in shaping Rockland’s identity through their leadership, hard work, and dedication to family and community.
Our Hispanic residents are educators who inspire the next generation, small business owners who fuel our economy, health care professionals who keep our families safe and well, and first responders who put their lives on the line for others. They are also leaders in government, nonprofit organizations, and houses of worship — all working to ensure Rockland is a place of opportunity for everyone.
As County Executive, I have had the privilege of working alongside many Hispanic leaders who are helping us address the most pressing challenges we face, whether it’s housing, public health, or economic development. Their voices, ideas, and energy make Rockland stronger.
This month is also an opportunity to honor the sacrifices and resilience of generations past. Many Hispanic families came to the United States in search of a better life, often facing great challenges and barriers along the way. Their perseverance reminds us of the core values that built this nation: hard work, family, and faith.
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, I encourage all Rockland residents to take part in the events and programs happening throughout our county. Let us honor the contributions of our Hispanic community, learn from one another, and continue building bridges of understanding and respect. Together, we can ensure Rockland remains a welcoming place where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
I am proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with all of you and grateful for the richness and vitality that our Hispanic community brings to Rockland County every day.
