On September 24th, I joined the New City Fire Department to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the passing of volunteer firefighter Kevin Landau. Fifty years ago, on September 24, 1975, 19 year old volunteer firefighter Kevin Landau lost his life while answering a fire alarm here in New City. Though his time with us was far too short, his courage and devotion to helping others continue to inspire us half a century later.
Some of you may remember that tragic day and others may be thinking, that name sounds familiar. Likely because you have driven past Kevin Landau Park right in downtown New City. The Town park named after Kevin is a beautiful, small, passive park adjacent to the New City Fire Department and across from Town Hall and the Rockland County Courthouse.
Kevin’s untimely passing deeply affected our town, his fellow firefighters, and volunteer organizations throughout the region. In response, the community came together to ensure his spirit of service would live on. Out of tragedy grew a legacy of hope: a scholarship fund established in Kevin’s name, which to date has awarded nearly $40,000 to Clarkstown North High School students who exemplify the same volunteer spirit that defined his life. Each recipient represents a piece of Kevin’s enduring influence, carrying forward his example of selflessness, service, and commitment to community.
As another reminder, and in honor of the 50th anniversary we dedicated Maple Avenue in Kevin’s honor to preserve his story, his sacrifice, and his values for generations to come. It is our hope that every person who passes Maple Avenue will be reminded of the bravery of a young man who answered the call, and of the importance of giving back to the community we share. Thank you to the New City Fire Department for coordinating a meaningful street dedication ceremony. Some of Kevin’s family were in attendance, elected officials, and volunteer firefighters from across the Town. Even past recipients of the scholarship joined to pay tribute to Kevin Landau.
The park, the scholarship, and now the sign on Maple Avenue are all reminders of Kevin Landau and his dedication to his community. Clarkstown has not forgotten, and will never forget. His life and his sacrifice remain part of who we are as a town.
