Traffic Safety Award Presented to Ramapo

The Town of Ramapo Police Department is proud toย  announce that it has been awarded the AAA Platinum Award for Community Traffic Safety, the highest honor in the region, recognizing theย  Departmentโ€™s comprehensive and sustained efforts to promote roadwayย  safety, education, and enforcement throughout the Town.ย

This distinguished recognition, shared by only a select few municipalitiesย  across the region, highlights the Departmentโ€™s โ€œboots on the groundโ€ย  commitment to protecting motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. Theย  award acknowledges a wide range of proactive initiatives including crosswalkย  enforcement details, educational outreach programs, impaired and drunkย  driving awareness campaigns, participation in the No Empty Chair initiative,ย  school bus safety operations, and the innovative Town of Ramapo Reflectiveย  Sash Program.ย

Ramapo Police officers serve as Child Passenger Safety Technicians andย  Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers, working closely with the NYS Police and State Department of Transportation to ensure compliance, education, and roadway safety for all. The Departmentโ€™s dedicated Traffic Safety Enforcement Unit, in combination with the dailyย  efforts of its patrol division, consistently maintains among the highest vehicle and traffic enforcement and impaired driving arrest levels inย  Rockland County.

Ramapo has also taken major steps forward in technology and data-driven safety improvements. Adaptive traffic lights are now being utilized throughout the Town, and the Departmentโ€™s Crash Reconstruction Unit employs advanced tools and techniques to determine causes of collisions,ย  providing valuable insights for potential infrastructure enhancements.ย

The Departmentโ€™s Drone as a First Responder (DFR) program, the first andย  only FAA-approved initiative of its kind in Rockland County, further demonstrates Ramapoโ€™s leadership in public safety innovation. This cutting edge program enhances operational efficiency and enables the Departmentย  to gather critical real-time data during emergencies and crash investigations, ultimately helping to make Ramapoโ€™s roadways safer.ย

Additionally, the Townโ€™s Taxi Registration Program through the Office ofย  Emergency Preparedness and Safety, promotes accountability and passengerย  safety through strict compliance inspections and licensing oversight.ย

โ€œThese are only a few of the initiatives brought forward by Supervisor Michael Specht, the Ramapo Town Board, the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Safety, and the Police Department as we work togetherย  to serve Rockland Countyโ€™s most populated municipality,โ€ said Chief of Police Dan Hyman. Supervisor Specht added, โ€œThe Town of Ramapo is honored by this recognition and remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and community partnership.โ€ย

The Ramapo PD extends its sincere appreciation to AAA forย  this Platinum Award distinction and congratulates our own Traffic Safetyย  Officer for receiving the prestigious AAA โ€œHEROโ€ Award for outstandingย  individual contributions to traffic safety.ย

Finally, the Department expresses its gratitude to the Ramapo community for their continued partnership and support in advancing these vital safetyย  initiatives.
