Hopefully, many of our residents are aware of a wonderful local not-for-profit organization called the Happy Jack Fund, founded by New City residents Steve and Eileen Doyle. The fund was created after Steve and Eileen suffered an unspeakable and devastating loss when their son, John Thomas, whom they called “Jack,” passed away at 9 months old from brain cancer. Determined to do something constructive with their grief, they created “The Happy Jack Fund” to raise money to assist other families who have lost a child. I cannot say enough good things about the Doyles and this incredible foundation which does such remarkable work, in particular with helping the siblings of those who have been lost.
On a personal level, The Happy Jack fund is a charity that is close to my heart. Unfortunately, my family suffered the devastating loss of a child three times, including my nieces Alyssia and Stacey. The work that Steve and Eileen are doing to support families and siblings going through this unimaginable loss is incredibly meaningful and compassionate.
The Happy Jack Fund holds several fundraisers throughout the year, but their flagship event is an annual 5K run. Each year, the Town of Clarkstown is proud to be a co-sponsor of the Happy Jack 5K walk/run held at Germonds Park in West Nyack and the surrounding neighborhood. This year’s event, scheduled for Saturday, October 18th, starts at 8:30am with a kids’ run and some fun music, followed by the kick-off of the 5K at 9:30am. Last year, a record number of participants attended ranging across all ages and running abilities. This year we are hoping for even more!
One of the most touching parts of the event is viewing the banners that are hung along the finish line, which families sponsor to commemorate their lost loved ones. Banners honoring my two nieces are among the many on display. It’s a somber and moving reminder of how precious life is and how it should never be taken for granted. The proceeds from this event fund scholarships for high school students who have lost a beloved sister or brother.
Finally, I’d like to thank all who help make this a great event every year – the Clarkstown Police Department and Police Auxiliaries, New City Fire Engine Co. No. 1, West Nyack Fire Department for the giant flag and their assistance, New City Ambulance Corps, and the Nanuet Community Ambulance Corps. for standing by, and all of the many volunteers and sponsors.
Special thank you to Steve and Eileen Doyle for having the determination and strength to start this amazing organization in honor of their son, and for supporting other families who have lost children. I encourage you to visit their website and social media pages to learn more about all this organization is doing. Hope to see you on Saturday, October 18th at Germonds Park!
