Rockland’s Continual Fight For a One Seat Ride

Harckham and Eachus speak on withheld transit funding

“President Trump’s withholding of the needed $18 billion for vital New York transit projects will kill 95,000 jobs, cost businesses more than $87 million and rob the regional economy at least $19.6 billion,” New York State Senator Pete Harckham said. “The move will also deprive Rockland County residents of the long-sought one-seat ride into Manhattan. Trump’s vindictive and partisan action, completely unrelated to DEI, not only has an impact on the big numbers, but it also hits hard working Rocklanders in their everyday lives by robbing them of a more convenient, time-saving way to get to work each day via the Bergen loop. This would save commuters traveling on Metro-North’s West-of-Hudson trains at least five hours of travel time and hassle during a regular work week, but is impossible without funding for the Gateway tunnels project.”

“Once again West-of-Hudson residents are a victim of senseless and irresponsible politics,” Assemblymember Christopher Eachus said. “Earlier this year MTA Chair Janno Leiber fully admitted our rail service “stinks” under questioning, and now the Trump Administration and his DC bureaucrats have ripped away billions in investments to our region due solely to partisan politics. The Bergen Loop would have drastically reduced travel time for working-class residents by finally giving us the single-seat ride to NYC that we deserve. This is unacceptable for our commuters, and I will continue to fight alongside my colleagues like Senator Harckham to rectify this injustice. Simply put, this is a direct attack on our region, and our federal leadership needs to step up.”
