Local Elections to Now Take Place During Even-Numbered Years

The NYS high court has decided to move elections to coincide with state and federal races. Some believe that this could bring a welcome amount of attention to local races, while others decry the move, claiming the ruling to be unconstitutional. County Executive Ed Day has released a statement criticizing the decision, stating, โ€œThe New York State Court of Appealsโ€™ decision to uphold the move of local elections to even-numbered years politically compromises the election law & renders our constitutional right to home rule impotent.ย

Home rule is the foundation of our democracy โ€” the ability of local communities to govern themselves.

It is a sad day for every municipality in New York that values independence, accountability, and the voice of its residents.โ€
