Lunch with Ed Day, County Executive

Breaking bread with someone who is in charge of a municipality like Rockland, a county with nearly 2,000 employees, is far from routine. Our editorial staff wanted to cover issues ranging from how to deal with CHPE to high school sports, and thatโ€™s really what Rockland is all about. Day is a sports coach at heart and the skills involved in coaching translate well to running a county in New York. Empty strip malls to bowling averages and bringing back the Rockland County Fair was all fair game during our โ€˜interrogationโ€™ of his 12-year stewardship of Rockland County.

โ€œWe could possibly bring back a County Fair,โ€ said Day. โ€œBringing in money from people outside the county is a win for our economy. Why not?โ€

What we find most outstanding about his leadership in Rockland is the fiscal shape of the county currently as compared to when Day first took over. Twelve years ago Rockland was on the doorstep of bankruptcy, reporting a staggering 138 million dollars in deficit. Through conservative fiscal management Rockland is now the toast of the state on the fiscal front. A 100 million dollar bond was paid off last year and the county is one of the only that has had a freeze, or a lowering of, real estate taxes for a few years running. The new budget Day has proposed keeps that tradition in line.

Given the new bond rating in January of 2025, Rockland Countyโ€™s AAA bond rating is the highest of any county in New York State.

Dayโ€™s challenger is an independent from Ramapo, Michael Parietti. Parietti is an activist who has been at it for a while in his town as aย  Founding Organizer of Preserve Ramapo/Rockland and a Member of the Rockland County Planning Board. However, Pariettiโ€™s accomplishments just donโ€™t match up to our currentย  County Executive.

How can we not encourage our readers to vote for Ed Day for another 4-year term? The RCT endorses Ed Day for Rocklandโ€™s County Executive.
