Landscape Architecture in the Hudson Valley
Presented by Alex Prizgintas
The latest historical lecture offered by Hudson Valley historian Alex Prizgintas, coming to the Tappan Library in Tappan, NY on Wednesday, December 10th at 6:30 PM, showcases the rich legacy of Landscape Architecture in our region. Highlighting the work of Calvert Vaux, Frederick Law Olmsted, and Andrew Jackson Downing, Prizgintas explored their rise to fame and most famous projects—much of which can be drawn to the city of Newburgh where the three crossed paths for the first times in the 1850s. Adapted from Alex’s 2021 film documentary produced in part with Marist College’s Hudson River Valley Institute, both Olmsted and Vaux remained tied to the Hudson Valley even after their fame with the construction of Central Park—particularly through Vaux’s architectural works and the business of the Olmsted Bros. firm. This program pays particular attention to two landmarks that received influences from both minds: Middletown’s Hillside Cemetery and Newburgh’s Downing Park—along with several other structures and parks designed by Olmsted, Vaux, and Downing across the Hudson Valley. A graduate of Marist College with degrees in Hudson River Valley History and Public Administration, Alex has been published in the Hudson River Valley Review, New York Archives Magazine, and Orange County Historical Society Journal on topics including Hudson River railroad history, Orange County’s dairy farming history, and the region’s early settlers. He serves as president of the Woodbury Historical Society and town historian of Woodbury in Orange County, New York.

It’s Spotify Wrapped Week!

Spotify is the most largely used music platform globally, with over 696million users monthly!
In addition to many uniquefeatures in the app such as an AI DJ and specialized music profile tastes, Spotify users around the world eagerly anticipate their annual “Spotify Wrapped.”
Every year, the app utilizes customized analytics about each users taste presented on an interactive shareable format. Some data shared includes the users “Top 5 Songs”, total number of minutes using the app, top genres, and more.
Now is the time to share your favorite songs with friends and family, and learn theirs in turn. According to Psychology Today, an increasing body of research suggests that music plays a crucial role in social bonding, often through “identity fusion.” Identity fusion is defined as “the feeling of oneness with others through alignment of actions, affect, and/or preferences.” This “oneness” comes from a sense of belonging to a social group and can be created through shared musical activities, with anything from singing karaoke, to sharing memories associated with songs. With this knowledge, we can try to incorporate music choices and experiences deliberately to have more connection in our communities.
