9 Fun Activities In Rockland You Probably Didn’t Know About

Rockland County, just a quick drive north of New York City, is the perfect day trip or staycation when you’re looking for something fun to do. The County is the ultimate destination for foodies, outdoor enthusiasts, or those looking for a break from the hectic city. Although there are many “obvious” activities to do in Rockland, like Bear Mountain State Park or the many museums and historic buildings, there are as many hidden gems that will have you smiling and having one of the best days ever, no matter the season.

1. Shop Local At Nyack Farmers Market

The Nyack Farmers Market is held throughout the year on a Thursday. It is the perfect place to shop for local produce and meet the people who call Rockland home. You will find fresh fruit and vegetables, handcrafted products, food trucks with international cuisines, and live music during the summer months.

Pestos, sushi, gemstones, and vegan delights, pickles, and bespoke knives… Whether you’re shopping for your pantry or for gifts, you’re sure to find exactly what you need here.

2. Gamble For A Cause

Although there is no casino in Rockland County, Big Brothers Big Sisters regularly hosts fundraising events that mimic a night at the casino. Their latest event in 2024 raised funds that supported local youth. According to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rockland County, it promises to be a “fun-filled night of raffles, casino games, and delicious food, all while making a positive impact.”

While waiting for the annual event, you can practice your gambling skills by playing at trusted online casinos. These platforms offer hundreds of casino games, along with bonuses, good odds, and secure transactions, all from the comfort of your home.

To see when the next casino night is being hosted, keep an eye on Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rockland County’s social media and website.

3. Rock Out In Rockland

The Rockland Music Festival happens every summer, so mark your calendars! It brings to the stage some of the best local and national performers, who let their voices and musical abilities be heard on the three stages at the event. Recent headliners included Magical Mystery Doors, The Ramblers, Ak40Devin, and The Slippery Chickens.

Attendees can enjoy food and drink, there’s a kiddies play area, and there’s even mini golf if you need a break from all the dancing.

4. Picnic At Tallman Mountain State Park

Bear Mountain State Park gets all the attention when it comes to outdoor areas in Rockland, but Tall Mountain State Park is well worth a visit, and you don’t have to deal with the crowds. The park is comprised mostly of wooded areas, ideal for a hot day out. Due to the park’s sloping hills, it has the most gorgeous views of the Hudson River and Piermont Marsh.

Packing a picnic and settling down on one of the park’s many benches can be the perfect day out. But, if you want something a bit more exhilarating, there’s a pool and a running track too. There are plenty of trails to explore, and it is a great cross-country skiing destination once the snow falls in winter.

5. Stay Overnight At West Mountain Shelter

The West Mountain Shelter in Harriman State Park is one of the most scenic overnight spots in the County. There are a couple of routes heading up to the hut, but the Timp-Torne Trail is the most common. It is a slowly meandering 10-mile trail that gives you views of the river far below.

You will need to plan ahead and pack essentials like camping equipment and enough water for the hike and overnight stay. The shelter can’t be booked, so you might just make some new friends during your visit if it is occupied when you arrive. Or, you can hang a hammock in a nearby tree and sleep under the stars.

6. Escape At The Edge VR

Just across the Hudson River is The Edge VR, an escape room and arcade like no other. You can explore free-roam virtual reality games, or enter an escape room where you and your friends will have to use your wits to solve puzzles and uncover mysteries.

There are several different escape rooms, like Escape The Lost Pyramid and Beyond Medusa’s Gate, that use VR technology to fully immerse you in the adventure.

7. Feel Like A Kid At Dave & Buster’s West Nyack

Dave & Buster’s might not be a secret gem, but the Nyack location promises a good time. This restaurant and entertainment venue doubles as an arcade and sports bar, where you get to play a wide variety of video games and watch live sports. The recently overhauled menu of the full-service restaurant offers American classics like wings and burgers, and a cocktail is a must with any meal.

8. Eat Till You’re Full At The Food Truck Festival

If you time your trip to Rockland right, you will find yourself at the Pearl River Food Truck Festival. This annual festival brings together food trucks from across the country, where you can tuck into pizza, local beers, tacos, and everything in between. Throughout the day, there are also live performances from local artists to keep the vibes going while you rest before your next meal. It is best to bring your own picnic blanket or lawn chair since seats are limited.

9. Paint, Swig, And Sing At Black Parakeetz

Black Parakeetz in Nyack is one of the best nights out you can have in the County. It is so much more than a cocktail bar. You can enjoy paint-and-sip with the girls, or belt your heart out in the karaoke lounge.

They also offer small bites, perfect for sharing, to nibble on as you watch your besties sing ABBA songs.

Bypass mainstream Nyack Beach State Park and Piermont, and discover what else Rockland County has to offer.
