December holds special significance as Universal Human Rights Month, a time when we pause to reflect on the fundamental principles of dignity, equality, and freedom that every person deserves. These are not just lofty ideals—they are values that must guide how we treat one another in our daily lives and in our shared community.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948, remains a powerful reminder that the liberties we rely on today were hard-won and must be safeguarded. Rockland is home to people of many faiths, ethnicities, and backgrounds, and this rich tapestry of cultures strengthens our community while reminding us that fostering inclusion and respect requires ongoing effort.
This year, I once again signed an official proclamation declaring December as Universal Human Rights Month in Rockland County.Â
By doing so, we reaffirm our collective commitment to justice, mutual respect, and equal opportunity. These values are the backbone of a strong and thriving community, and recognizing this month serves as a reminder to each of us to do our part in defending them.
Universal Human Rights Month invites us to look inward and consider how we contribute to a more compassionate and equitable society. Whether it is engaging in constructive dialogue, reaching out to support a neighbor, volunteering time to local causes, or standing firmly against acts of hate or discrimination, every effort matters. Each action, no matter how small, helps build a county where every resident feels valued and heard.
As we close out the year and look ahead, I encourage all Rockland residents to remember that human rights are not just a topic for December—they are a year-round responsibility. Let us carry the spirit of this month forward and continue building a future where dignity and respect define who we are and how we move forward together.
Rockland County is stronger because of the people who call it home, and I am proud to stand with each of you as we work toward a more just, inclusive, and united community.
