Street Renamed After Fallen Firefighter

A bright red sign now stands atop Lenox Avenue in Congers,  proudly remembering George Wohl of the Congers Fire Department who tragically passed 22 years ago while responding to a call.

Wohl was described by Congressman Mike Lawler as a “dedicated and beloved member of the [Congers Fire] Department,” and as someone always ready with a smile, a helping hand, or an interesting tidbit about local history.

Supervisor Hoehmann shared how Wohl would now forever be a piece of Rockland history by recalling an old saying, sharing “A person dies twice – when they actually die, and then the last time somebody ever mentions their name… That will never happen with George Wohl.”

While the day could have easily been sorrowful, the entire event was filled with fond memories, lighthearted jokes, and smiles from family members and legislators alike. No one seemed to want to leave. Thankfully, everyone can come back and say hi to Wohl right there at the red sign now forever standing sentinel over Lenox Avenue.

“First I want to apologize to the entire neighborhood for terrorizing the neighborhood for 33 years” said George Wohl III, bringing warmth and levity to the chilly day as a crowd gathered to remember his father and his over 30 years of service to the county.
