Small Great Things is a 2016 novel by Jodi Picoult that explores racism, privilege, and justice through the story of Ruth Jefferson, an experienced African-American labor and delivery nurse. When white supremacist parents refuse to let her touch their newborn, she hesitates to perform CPR, leading to a high-profile trial where she is charged with a serious crime, forcing her and her public defender to confront their own biases. Told from three perspectives (Ruth, the public defender, and the white supremacist father), the book examines systemic racism and challenges readers to confront uncomfortable truths about prejudice.

Snowy Views in Rockland

This weekend, Rockland is expected to receive over fourteen inches of snow.
Here are some quick tips for enduring the frigid temperatures and inclement weather.
Driving:
– Slow Down & Smooth Out: Reduce speed significantly, avoid sudden braking, sharp turns, or rapid acceleration; use gentle, steady inputs.
– Increase Distance: Allow at least 4-6 seconds of following distance for braking.
– Prepare Your Vehicle: Ensure good tires (winter tires are best), working wipers, and full washer fluid; keep an emergency kit with a shovel, kitty litter (for traction), and blankets.
– Know Your Car: Gently press the gas to start; avoid spinning wheels.
– Stay Clear of Snowplows
Shoveling & Outdoor Safety:
– Stretch First: Warm up and stretch before you start.
– Lift with Legs: Bend your knees, not your back, and avoid heavy lifting.
– Pace Yourself: Take frequent breaks and drink water.
– Clear Exhaust Pipe: Make sure your car’s exhaust isn’t blocked by snow to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
Stay safe and warm this weekend! I always like to plan to watch a comfort movie, start a fire, and make hot chocolate on snow days. Send in your snow day favs to gillian@rocklandcountytimes.com for a chance to be featured in next week’s paper.

Thornton Wilder’s Our Town
Performed by Children Shakespeare Theatre

Thornton Wilder’s classic paean to the beauties and sorrows of being human comes to the stage of Children’s Shakespeare Theatre starting January 30, 2026. CST’s cast of sixteen children between the ages of eight and fourteen are excited to tell the story of life in the small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire in the early 1900s where 25 cents was a big allowance, and the milkman still delivered milk each day to his customers.
In the context of life in the early 1900s, Emily Webb (Nora Maloney) and George Gibbs (Aaron Benjamin) become high school sweethearts and marry before Emily dies in childbirth. The play ends with the citizens who’ve passed away commenting on how those who still live deal with their lives. It has been a great journey for the children in the cast who are excited to bring the story to an audience.
As a Shakespeare Company, CST takes pride in its rare non-Shakespearean offerings. Our Town was described by playwright Edward Albee as “the greatest American play ever written,” and no less than Britain’s Guardian called it “America’s answer to Shakespeare,” premiering on Broadway in 1938. It has since become one of the most produced plays in the modern global repertoire, “not for its American-ness” says the Guardian, but because it’s “…about mortality, about the brevity of human life and Wilder’s charge to the audience to appreciate what they have while they have it.”
CST Managing Director Grey Johnson directs a cast which also includes Owen Oh as the Stage Manager, Declan Amendolia as Doc Gibbs, Alexander Josuweit as Mr. Webb, Ruth Benjamin as Mrs. Webb, and Stella Mattii as Mrs. Gibbs, as well as Eva Barak, Adelia Brasor, Colette Dickey, Gala Giuliani, Levon Goldberg, Zoe Lenchner, Sofia Panzera, Ezra Vaughan, and Elliot Zimbler. It is Assistant Directed by Lily Monday and Emilia Falkner, with costumes by Maggie Young.
The cast and company of Children’s Shakespeare Theatre come from New York and New Jersey and include homeschooled students, along with students from Nyack Middle School, South Orangetown Middle School, Lewis F. Cole Middle School, Elisabeth Morrow School, Upper Nyack Elementary School, Cottage Lane Elementary, Liberty Elementary, Valley Cottage Elementary, Primoris Academy, Green Meadow Waldorf School and Windward School.
Children’s Shakespeare Theatre receives support from the Jerome Robbins Foundation and our many individual donors. Our Town is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com.
Tickets for all performances are $25 for adults, $20 for children under 18. Group rates are also available. Teachers can see Our Town for free. Tickets and more information about Children’s Shakespeare Theatre can be found on our website www.childrensshakespeare.org

Borscht Belt Architecture: Designs of the Jewish Alps at the West Nyack Library
Transitioning from his introductory “Borscht Belt Artifacts” program, this part two program highlights the legacy of interior and exterior architecture that defined the Borscht Belt Catskills. Following the “Silver Age” hotels of Victorian style that defined the late 19th century, new Jewish hotels, bungalow colonies, and growing resorts added their own influences to existing structures. Several movements in architecture, such as Sullivan County Mission Style and Sullivan County Tudor Style designs, gained a popular reputation in the Borscht Belt. Then, in the 1950s, the wave of Mid-Century Modern influences within this region of New York set the tone for hotel designs on a national scale. Using postcards, photographs, images from antique brochures, and modern-day scenes, Alex Prizgintas reveals how this architecture helped to define elements of the quintessential Borscht Belt experience from room design to recreational activities, entertainment, outdoor landscape, and what architecture features can still be seen today.
Join Alex Prizgintas on Wednesday, January 28th at 6:30 PM with the West Nyack Library to view “Borscht Belt Architecture, Designs of the Jewish Alps.” Since Prizgintas began collecting items from the Borscht Belt ten years ago, awareness for this crucial aspect of our local past has rapidly expanded with the opening of the Borscht Belt Museum in Ellenville, the ongoing Borscht Belt Historical Marker Project, and a number of both films as well as books that have been published. “Seeing this history finally receiving the recognition it deserves is incredibly rewarding, and I am honored to be a part of this new chapter for the memories of the Borscht Belt.”
