Bluefield Camp Girls at Hook Mountain Bathing Beach

Nyack, N.Y.

Circa 1913-1917

The image features a group of Y.W.C.A. campers from Camp Bluefield wading in the Hudson River at Nyack Beach.

After the Blauvelt Rifle Range was abandoned by the New York Guard in 1913, it was used as the site for a summer camp for girls sponsored by the Young Women’s Christian Association. For a nominal fee, campers mostly from New York City would spend time in rural Blauvelt at Camp Bluefields. The YWCA’s programs continued until the United States joined the fighting in World War I, when the site was revived as a military camp.
