Rockland Lovebirds

Governor Kathy Hochul & First Gentleman Bill Hochul

1. How long have you been married?

42 years this summer

2. Where did you meet?

We first met while we were summer interns for the State Assembly in Buffalo in 1980. My job was clipping newspapers and one day Bill walked in and said to turn the newspaper to the horoscope section…he then said looks like you’re going to lunch today with a good looking young guy! I responded, “I can’t wait for a good looking guy to show up…I look forward to it.” We did ultimately go out to lunch and still have the same fun together we had that first summer of dating.

The wind chill temperature at the top of the mountain was -45 degrees but we skied together all day and we have been together ever since.

3. One piece of advice for couples?

My pieces of advise for couples is to respect one another opinion and to listen to one another. I also recommend to travel to your bucket list places as soon as you can because it gets tough once you have kids. Lastly, never go to bed angry. Kiss and make up before going to bed.

2. Where did you meet?

We met at a birthday party while going to school in Santa Barbara. He insisted I take his jacket to protect me from the frigid Santa Barbara winter, and the rest is history.

3. One piece of advice for couples?

Love is in the small, “unromantic” stuff – be with someone who puts your slippers by the heater, makes your siblings laugh, and replaces your windshield fluid when it’s 2 degrees outside. Never stop looking for ways to show each other small acts of love, be each other’s #1 cheerleader, and have fun!

3. One piece of advice for couples?

Be with someone who loves all of you. Loves you first thing in the morning and loves you even when you forget to buy milk or leave dirty socks in the living room. Be with someone who makes you better, who supports your dreams and celebrates with you. Be with someone who buys you Dunkin just because.  Be with someone that after 30 years, you love more than you did the day you got married. One of the biggest gifts you can receive in this life is a partnership filled with love, respect, and laughter.
