At Play: A Family Concert

The Rockland Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce this season’s Family Concert in association with ArtsRock. The concert will be presented on March 8 th at 4 pm at The Angel, 18. S Broadway, Nyack 10960.
Our program begins with “Once more, with feeling”, an exploration of how emotions can be expressed through music, written and narrated by Rockland Symphony Orchestra’s conductor and music director
Dr. Nicole Peragine. This new work describes common emotions felt by children – and adults too – through the performance of musical excerpts from well-known repertoire spanning the baroque era to present day. Tired, excited, sad, mad, happy? Listen to how our orchestra can express these feelings!
Our program will continue with the re-telling of a timeless tale – “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, narrated
by Elliott Forrest of ArtsRock and WQXR fame. There are many wonderful musical excerpts to highlight the story and the action is expressed through shadowplay puppetry. Shadowplay is an ancient art form that many cultures throughout the world have used to tell a story. Cutout figures, manipulated by people behind a screen with a light source, bring to life the action of our story.
We hope you can join us on March 8th and experience these two program pieces – one old and one new – guaranteed to delight!
For reservations and tickets, please go to the ArtsRock.org website.

Clarkstown North Introduces Externship Opportunity for Students
Future ready learning is extending beyond the classroom for seniors at Clarkstown North High School. Michelle Haggerty, a mathematics and special education teacher, and Sheila McCombs, an English and special education teacher, are excited to announce a project they’ve been working on since October: “externship” opportunities for seniors.
So far, there are 90 students signed up for the program, which is being implemented for the first time this semester. Participants are gaining hands-on experience in a wide range of fields, from medicine and education to law and business. Haggerty worked closely with Clarkstown North Principal Candace Reim, drawing on Haggerty’s experience in Westchester schools, where externships are more common, to help bring the initiative to life.
“[Reim’s] goal was to be able to make our school make our kids ready for the real world… to really bring back to our students a chance to explore the things that they’re interested and passionate about, so that they have a taste for it before they actually major in college,” Haggerty said.
The initiative aligns with the school’s broader theme of “Future Ready” learning, where the school has been increasing their focus on preparing each student for their future professional life.
Students are responsible for securing their own externship placements, deliberately designed to build independence and professional soft skills.
“We really want the kids to be… very self‑motivated and determined,” Haggarety said. “The kids really have to find their own placement. If they get stuck, then we come in and we start helping them, but we want them to start by reaching out.”
McCombs noted the variety of interests students are pursuing. “It’s just amazing, because the kids all want to do very different things, from learning how to run their own business… to neurology: they’re just all over. And it’s kind of amazing,” she said.
Both educators emphasize that the program’s value isn’t only in confirming a career choice, but also in helping students reconsider one.
“I remember from my experience in college and working different jobs is that sometimes the thing you get out of it is, ‘I don’t want to do exactly what I thought before’” McCombs said, “That has a lot of value too.”
The externship program is open to any senior in good academic standing. Haggerty stressed the program’s inclusivity, sharing “I’m really excited because the program is for all students… It doesn’t just go after our higher‑end kids – all students can do it… it’s about giving everyone in this building the ability to explore an interest and take a shot at something.”
Students are required to log 25 hours a week through their chosen externship. These “business hours” replace traditional school hours, and participants meet with advisors weekly to reflect on their experiences. The 25 hours can be applied however the student and sponsor see fit, encouraging time management and flexibility. On June 11th, the students will present their findings at their Research Symposium.
Clarkstown North High School is currently seeking additional sponsors to host student externs. Community members interested in mentoring or offering workplace experience are encouraged to contact mhaggerty@ccsd.edu to support the program and provide students with meaningful, real-world learning opportunities.

Sunday March 22, 2026 at 1:00 PM
When second grader PJoin us in welcoming Michael Tubridy, who with Robert Polner is the author of An Irish Passion for Justice: The Life of Rebel New York Attorney Paul O’Dwyer.
Born in County Mayo, Ireland, O’Dwyer cut a principled and progressive path through New York City’s political machinery and America’s reactionary Cold War landscape. He maintained a consistent left-wing politics and defense of accused Communists in the labor movement, which exposed him to sharp criticism within and beyond the Irish-American community. Even so, his fierce beliefs, loyalty to his brother William, who was the city’s mayor after World War II, and influence in Irish-American circles also inspired respect and support. Recognized by his gentle brogue and white pompadour, he drove the discussion on many difficult domestic and international causes and, finally, enlisted then-future president Bill Clinton to bring an end to the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
Michael is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in The New York Daily News, USA Today, The Irish Echo, Irish America, City and State NY, Vital City, L.A. Progressive, and The Recorder. A lifelong resident of Bergen County, NJ, he also frequently writes about Irish and Irish American history in his blog “A Boat Against the Current.”

Join us in welcoming Michael Tubridy, who with Robert Polner is the author of An Irish Passion for Justice: The Life of Rebel New York Attorney Paul O’Dwyer.
Books will be available in store or online at Bookshop.org (hardcover and ebook available).

What’s Cooking with Phyllis

By Phyllis Greenway
It seems lately that we have multiple worries. It may be family, fuel, or financial… A friend, visiting yesterday told of her Sicilian grandmother’s solution. when a member of her family had a headache, she would cut a slice of a potato, and tie it to the inflicted’s forehead with a silk scarf, and direct the patient to lie down. Within a half hour, the pain would disappear.
It was not discussed what kind of potato… russet, sweet, Yukon Gold? (No, that can’t be right.)
Perhaps this might be the solution to teenage angst.. “shape up or I’ll tie a potato to your head!” (Cuts down on medication costs plus reduced excess inventory in the kitchen.)
Chocolate!
Of course, we all have recipes for Brownies, and they are all great, and soothing (and addictive) in their way. But I will insert two other chocolate themes I hope you will enjoy.
Three Hole Cake
Takes about 10 minutes to make
Preheat oven to about 350 degrees.
In a large bowl, mix together:
1 1/2 cups four
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
Make 3 holes in mixture, in one put 6 Tablespoons vegetable oil, in the second put 1 Tablespoon vinegar, in the third, 1 teaspoon vanilla.
Pour over all:
1 cup water
Mix thoroughly and bake in 8 x 8 battered pan. Let cool before frosting.
Note: may be doubled easily.
Chocolate Pie
Not too sweet, but you might sit back and smile!
Scald one cup milk
Add 1 1/2 sq of unsweetened chocolate
Stir until melted
Sift together:
2 1/2 Tablespoons flour
1 cup sugar
Add to above
Add
1 slightly beaten egg
Boil till thick take off heat.
Add 1 tablespoon vanilla
Cool, then spread in a baked pie shell. Chill again and top with sweetened whipped cream. Decorate top with chocolate curls made by scraping a square of chocolate with a potato peeler. Chill before serving. I thank, again, a fiend in Hawaii in 1957, who shared this with me.
“Move It Or Lose It”: A Rockland Fitness Guide
It’s Getting Hot in Here Yoga

Welcome back to my fitness journey, where I, Community Editor Gillian DeStefano, explore new and unconventional means of exercise as per my 2026 New Year’s Resolution of getting over my “gym-timidation”.
Whether you’re like me, looking for a different environment to be active, or you’re missing your ability to move more freely, my hope is to bring awareness to the variety of experiences Rockland offers and inspire resolutions to reality.
Enter Playful Yogi: “Hot Flow” Yoga in Nyack. This class takes place every Thursday at 6:15 p.m., and the first thing you’ll notice is how beautiful the space is. White lanterns hang from the ceiling alongside seasonal decor for Valentine’s day, complimenting the deep purple walls. The lobby alone had spaces to sit, beverages available for purchase, and cubbies for your belongings. Owner Naomi Camiller greeted us and provided complimentary towels and mats. The studio also provides a personal shower, changing rooms, and private bathrooms.
The class itself was about an hour long, and was led by instructor Krystina Drasher. There were six total people in the class, half of the group being myself, my mom, and Managing Editor Sierra Lidén. The moment we entered the studio, we faced a wave of heat and humidity. Panels lined the ceiling, and instructor Drasher informed us that if we would rather not sit directly beneath the panels, the heat would be less intense.
This heat for me felt like a giant hug, especially in the bitter cold weather we have been experiencing. Everyone has different temperature tolerance, so it’s good to know what works for your body. Drasher later let us know that the room reached up to 100 degrees.
The class, titled “Hot Flow,” was a Vinyasa session, which is a dynamic yoga style that links movement with breath, often called “flow” for its continuous, seamless transitions between poses. According to their website, the warmth boosts flexibility, promotes detoxification, and fosters a meditative space to deepen anyone’s yoga practice.
The class itself was incredibly grounding. The intimate class size, coupled with the heat and the mindful instruction had me feeling most zen. I would say that the class was on the more difficult side, so if you have no yoga experience this might not be for you. Playful Yogi offers lots of beginner level classes, so no need to have FOMO. I used to be a semi-active yogi, but have not regularly attended classes in years and felt comfortable.
Drasher led the class with intentional inclusion. She repeated to do “what feels right for your body” and even gently guided us with kind corrections.
As the class came to an end, my body was pleasantly buzzing, my mind clear, and my heart full. I felt like I could fall asleep right then and there. Drasher concluded the session with a beautiful poem about self love. The themes of the night were aligned with most yoga practices: grounding, mindfulness, and breathing. If you are someone who experiences anxiety, overthinking, or excessive worrying, I could not recommend yoga enough.
I think that I will have to add Hot Yoga to my favorites list. I would encourage people to enter with an open mind and to take the hour to connect with their bodies in an intentional way. I have not felt so at peace and content in quite a long time, so thank you Playful Yogis and instructor Drasher for the experience.
