Sunday March 22, 2026 at 1:00 PM

When second grader Join us in welcoming Michael Tubridy, who with Robert Polner is the author of An Irish Passion for Justice: The Life of Rebel New York Attorney Paul O’Dwyer.

Born in County Mayo, Ireland, O’Dwyer cut a principled and progressive path through New York City’s political machinery and America’s reactionary Cold War landscape. He maintained a consistent left-wing politics and defense of accused Communists in the labor movement, which exposed him to sharp criticism within and beyond the Irish-American community. Even so, his fierce beliefs, loyalty to his brother William, who was the city’s mayor after World War II, and influence in Irish-American circles also inspired respect and support. Recognized by his gentle brogue and white pompadour, he drove the discussion on many difficult domestic and international causes and, finally, enlisted then-future president Bill Clinton to bring an end to the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Michael is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in The New York Daily News, USA Today, The Irish Echo, Irish America, City and State NY, Vital City, L.A. Progressive, and The Recorder. A lifelong resident of Bergen County, NJ, he also frequently writes about Irish and Irish American history in his blog “A Boat Against the Current.”

The inaugural event was held in memory of long-time club member Noel O’Connell. This year, we run in honor of all deceased members of Rockland GAA, most especially, we would like to remember Brian Fennell and Padraig Gargan.

To guarantee your T-Shirt, you must register by March 15th – NO EXCEPTIONS!  We will order extra, but we can not guarantee your size after the cut-off date.

The Rockland GAA will host a FUN RUN for children 12 years old and younger.  This will be a free event and will be held after the 5K.  Please note – if you’re only participating in the FUN RUN, you will not receive a t-shirt unless you also register for a t-shirt.

Sponsorship opportunities are available. If interested, please contact the race director through this form.

This event will take place on March 28th.

Brian Fennell

Born on December 2, 1977, in Mt. Vernon, New York, Brian Fennell brought warmth, laughter, and connection to everyone he met. He grew up in Pearl River, New York, later settling with his family in Westwood, New Jersey.

Known for his quick wit, legendary prank calls, and easy conversation, Brian had a gift for making people feel seen and valued. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

As Brian often said, “Do not mourn me in my death, but celebrate my life.”  So, on Saturday, March 28th, at the 6th Annual Rockland GAA Memorial 5K, let’s do what Brian asked – let’s celebrate his life.

Padraig Gargan

Padraig Gargan was born on December 7, 1991, in Bronxville, New York, to Patrick “Francie” Gargan and Ann Margaret “Mags” Gargan. He was raised on Voss Avenue in Yonkers before moving to Pearl River in 2003.

Padraig will be remembered for his bright smile, warm embrace, devotion to family, and unwavering loyalty to his friends.  And as we run the Rockland GAA Memorial 5k, let’s keep those remembrances with us.

Seriously Simple

As the weather warms up. It’s time for a California classic

By Diane Rossen Worthington

As the author of “The Cuisine of California” and “The California Cook,” I have researched California cooking history throughout the 20th century. From patio cooks to garden salads, modern California Cuisine has evolved a lot. This succulent swordfish dish originally relied on mesquite wood to add a smokey sweet flavor to the marinated fish. Today, I cook it on a gas grill or stovetop grill with the tangy, sweet-tart flavor contrast of lemon, garlic and fresh ginger. As the weather warms up, this would be nice to barbecue on your outdoor grill.

Swordfish has a high mercury level and is recommended to be eaten occasionally (once a month or less), but is worth enjoying on occasion with this zesty marinade. You can use other firm-fleshed fish like shark, tuna, and halibut with this marinade.

I have often accompanied this dish with a full-bodied Napa chardonnay, but as time has gone by I prefer a California or New Zealand sauvignon blanc or a French Sancerre with the fish. Try different varietals and see which one you prefer. Serve with vegetable rice or couscous and a saute of zucchini and carrots.

Swordfish in Lemon-Ginger Marinade

Serves 6

Note: Lime juice and zest may be substituted for lemon.

6 swordfish steaks, 1/3 to 1/2 pound each and no more than 1 inch thick

For the marinade:

1/2 cup lemon juice

2 medium cloves garlic, minced

1 1/2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger

1 teaspoon finely chopped lemon zest

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 tablespoons oil

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Combine marinade ingredients in a medium bowl. Whisk until blended. Taste for seasoning. Remove 1/4 cup of marinade for finishing the swordfish.

2. In a large, shallow nonaluminum dish, arrange fish steaks and pour marinade over. Marinate fish for 2 to 4 hours in refrigerator

3. Prepare barbecue for medium-heat grilling or heat grill pan. Remove fish from marinade. Grill fish about 3 inches from flame 3 to 5 minutes on each side, depending upon their thickness. Place the fish on serving plates.

4. Heat remaining marinade in a small saucepan over medium heat. Pour some of the remaining marinade over each steak. Garnish with parsley springs. Serve immediately

Advance preparation: The dish may be made ahead through Step 2 up to four hours ahead. Refrigerate.

FIRST Robotics Teams Prepare to Compete at Hudson Valley Regional Competition

The FIRST Hudson Valley Regional Competition will be held Wednesday, March 18 to Saturday, March 21 at Rockland Community College. During the competition, high school students will have an opportunity to showcase and test their robots, while competing for a chance to advance to the FIRST Championship in Houston next month.

Optimum, a local provider of fiber internet, mobile and TV services, is not only a sponsor of the Hudson Valley Regional Competition but is supporting eight of the teams competing next week, including teams from Irvington High School, Ossining High School, Yonkers Middle High School, and Clarkstown South High School. In anticipation of next week’s event, Optimum and Mayor Arlene Burgos recently visited the Irvington High School’s FIRST Robotics team Bulldog Bytes to get a look at their innovative robot build and cheer them on.

During the visit, the team demonstrated how they used 3D printers to manufacture custom robot parts and engineered a unique single-piece bumper, making installation, removal, and maintenance more efficient. Despite encountering challenges such as wiring issues, time constraints, and limited shared workspace, the students have shown teamwork, with experienced members mentoring and training newer teammates.

Optimum’s commitment to robotics community FIRST helps supply resources and tools needed for teams to build and program a robot to perform this season’s challenge, REBUILT™. In REBUILT™, FIRST Robotics Competition teams will use engineering skills and re-imagine the past. By participating in FIRST, students continue developing their skills across mechanical and electrical engineering, coding, programming, marketing, communications, leadership, finance, community outreach, and more.
