Camp Invention’s Summer STEM Program
Camp Invention®, a nationally recognized, nonprofit summer enrichment program, is coming to Clarkstown Community Learning Center the week of August 17, 2026 – August 21, 2026.
A program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame® in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Camp Invention challenges children in grades K-6 to tap into their natural curiosity and use their creativity to solve problems. Through hands-on activities, Camp Invention promotes STEM learning; builds confidence, leadership, perseverance and resourcefulness; and encourages entrepreneurship — all in a fun and engaging environment.
Each year, the program features new curricula inspired by some of our nation’s most world-changing inventors — the National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees. This year’s Spark program encourages children to be confident in their ideas and explore their innovativeness through hands-on activities including:
Space Morphers™: Kids build a DIY rocket and launch an epic mission to transform a new planet’s atmosphere, terrain and ecosystem. After a high-energy Rover Race to collect samples and data, they grow dazzling crystal trees and hatch a mysterious animal egg in a Space Lab.
Make Waves™: Campers ride the waves of entrepreneurship and invention! Inspired by a surfer’s journey, they create prototypes, pitch their innovative products to hook investors and build a billboard boat to set sail and “make waves” in the market.
Fur-ensics™: Kids sharpen their animal detective skills with Cap E. Bara and a fleet of robotic capybaras. They investigate a trail of footprints, collect bits of fluffy fur and examine suspicious splatters before forensically analyzing evidence that has a surprising twist.
The Infringers™: Campers use their invention superpowers to solve challenges in their community and around the world. They miniaturize top-secret innovations, safeguard their designs using cryptography and protect their intellectual property from the Infringers.
“I love that this camp lets my kids step out of the usual roles that they have at home and in school, and explore different parts of themselves,” said the parent of 2025 Camp Invention campers. “At camp my son learns to be more creative and my daughter learns to be more independent.”
All local Camp Invention programs are facilitated and taught by qualified educators who reside and teach in the community. Camp Invention serves 147,000 students every year and partners with more than 2,600 schools and districts across the nation. For more information or to register, visit invent.org/camp.
Premiere Of “My Yiddishe Bubby”
Original play tells grandmother’s story through Yiddish songs and personal narratives at Beth Am Temple
Through the first-person storytelling and Yiddish folk songs of “My Yiddishe Bubby,” Karen Fried will recount the experiences of four women during wartime and the Holocaust. Fried will perform the solo show based on the lives of her grandmother and three other women at Beth Am Temple on Sunday, April 26 at 2 pm.
The unique program will bridge the past to the present by interweaving songs and spoken personal narratives with accordion accompaniment by Dorie Byrne.
Fried, a trained vocalist and music educator, created and wrote the show to bring to life the stories of her grandmother Clara Notovitz of Hungary; 16-year-old Mirele, and music teacher and opera singer Lyuba Levitsky, both from the Vilna Ghetto in Lithuania; and a Polish widow from Bialystok, Poland.
With monologues relating the histories of the women, Fried imagines what life was like for her grandmother from 1928 to 2018 as she was transported from Hungary to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp and eventually made her way to Manhattan. The premiere will feature Fried performing forgotten Yiddish folk songs that were written during the Holocaust.
The dramatic performance about life during the Holocaust is appropriate for older children and children ready to learn about it. A print program with texts and translations for each piece of music and background will be provided. The free 60-minute program will be followed by a Q&A session and light refreshments. The public is invited to attend. Pre-registration is required by
Friday, April 24 and can be made at info@bethamtemple.org.
A professional opera singer and native New Yorker, Fried has performed in the United States, Italy, Austria and France. Her interest in Yiddish song began 10 years ago and builds on her classical training at Juilliard Pre-College, the New England Conservatory of Music and San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Beth Am Temple is a reform temple, which embraces tradition and draws its congregation from throughout Rockland County, NY and northern Bergen County, NJ. It is located on the New York/New Jersey border at 60 East Madison Ave in Pearl River, NY. Its website is:

What’s Cooking With Phyllis

Vincent Price: whenever he was in a movie, you were sure someone was going to “go.” He would wall them up, or strangle them, and often lose his mind after.
He made his fortune doing these parts, but also, with co-authorship with his wife, Mary, he compiled a fabulous cookbook, published in 1965.
What follows is one of my favorites from that volume:
Vincent Price’s Apple Tart
Tart shell:
1 1/4 cup flour
4 tablespoons sugar
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter; sliced
Pinch salt
2 egg yolks
Grated rind of one lemon
Filling:
3 cooking apples
Apricot preserves
Sift flour on pastry board, make well in middle. Place sugar, yolks, salt and butter in well. Mix those ingredients to paste, knead in flour, form into ball, chill 30 minutes.
Roll out 2/3 of the pastry and place in an 8 inch pie shell.
Core, pare, and slice apples very thinly, spiraling the slices from the center to the outer edge.
Spread surface of the apples with 12 oz of apricot jam which has been sieved.
Roll out rest of pastry, cut in strips to form a lattice top on filling by weaving strips beginning at an edge with strips at 90 degree angles, leaving small squares between the strips.
Bake in 400 degree over for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees for 30 minutes or longer till apples are tender.
Remove from oven and sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar. Serve warm.
