The Gomez Mill House: the Nation’s Oldest Jewish Home
with the Nanuet Public Library
The Hudson Valley played an instrumental role in the American Revolution, was the crossroads of America’s nineteenth-century industrialization, and witnessed the cultural revolution during the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. One era of transformation is, however, often overlooked. Contrasting the region’s seventeenth-century settlements, which were defined by ethnic, religious, and cultural identities, the eighteenth-century market revolution influenced these communities with evolving commercial forces. The development of transportation on the Hudson River and the growth of New York City as a center of trade linked residents to the burgeoning Atlantic market. Regional farmers and artisans, however, often lacked the finances and influence to become directly engaged in these lucrative ventures, so instead, they consigned their wares through well-established intermediary merchants. One of these businessmen was Luis Moses Gomez, a Jewish refugee and prominent eighteenth century New York City merchant. Expanding his business interests northward in 1716, Gomez purchased land in Marlboro, New York, where he occupied this important intermediary role between residents and the expanding market revolution. Gomez’s position in this changing society, as well as the three centuries of history endured by his Hudson Valley property, known today as the Gomez Mill House, are extraordinary lenses through which socioeconomic and cultural advancements in the Hudson Valley can be observed.
On Thursday, April 23rd at 1:00 PM, join Alex Prizgintas with the Nanuet Public Library to learn more about Gomez and his rich legacy in the Hudson Valley. A Marist College graduate with degrees in history and public administration, he has been published in several journals, such as the peer-reviewed Hudson River Valley Review and New York Archives Magazine, as well as the Orange County Historical Society Journal and the Antique Bottle & Glass Collector Magazine. Alex serves as town historian of Woodbury and Tuxedo, NY, and president of the Woodbury Historical Society. This program is offered in-person at the library as well as virtually over ZOOM. To register, please call the library at (845) 623-4281 ext. 2 or check out their website.

Thursday April 16, 2026 at 6:00 PM
In honor of Poetry Month, we welcome Christine Potter for two mini workshops!
The best poetry surprises us, but we get so hung up trying to make things perfect that we get in our own way. How do you write a poem that nobody else could have written except for you? The answer is in your memories, your own truth. This workshop will look at the specific image and show you how to get it onto the page. We’ll write together. There may even be crayons involved.
Bring an open mind and let’s make it new!

What’s Cooking With Phyllis

I find it a great pleasure to read old cookbooks, and compare the recipes of today with long ago. Often they include ingredients that are “Left Over” and use them in a wonderful way.
These books often also have tips on cleaning, and general maintenance of family and self… some hit home. So, I’ll include them once in a while. Enjoy them with me.
