Congers Trailway Partial Closure

A portion of the Congers Lake Trailway remains closed indefinitely due to a safety issue with the boardwalk between location markers 47 and 54. A number of the aging pilings under the walkway have shifted and separated from the deck infrastructure. Over the past weeks, the Town has been assessing the extent of the damage and evaluating all potential temporary and long-term repair options. This is a complex problem and the work requires permits from the NYS DEC. The Town is actively communicating with state partners and agencies to expedite the permitting process and get the closed section open as soon as possible. Unfortunately, due to the lengthy NYS DEC permitting process it is not possible to provide a re-opening date at this time.

The Town will continue to provide updates as the project moves forward. Please continue to follow the detour signs posted near the dam and Beckerle Lumber.

Seriously Simple: Mother’s Day citrus pound cake

By Diane Rossen Worthington

I love traditions. This Mother’s Day cake has been a keeper in my family for many years. I loved to bring this to my mom, either as a part of brunch or tea, and now I will share it with my daughter every year. We usually decide the day before if it will be a brunch or an afternoon tea where this citrus confection will be the star of the meal.

This lemon-lime pound cake is a cross between a tea bread and a cake and is chock-full of citrus flavor. I have found using a cake flour is preferred here because it produces a lighter crumb texture than all-purpose flour. I like to accompany this cake with fresh berries or fresh fruit salad and a dollop of lemon curd.

If you need more than one loaf you can double or triple this recipe. I like to give my daughter an extra loaf (wrapped in foil with a ribbon) to take home. So add this to your Mother’s Day brunch or invite your mom or daughter over for tea, and serve this for a perfect lovely moment celebrating mom

.

Citrus Pound Cake

Serves 6

For the cake:

1 cup cake flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Pinch salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

1 cup sugar

3 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 tablespoon lime zest

1 tablespoon lemon zest

2 tablespoons milk

2 tablespoons lemon juice

For the glaze:

1/2 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons lime juice

To serve:

Fresh fruit salad or berries

Store bought lemon curd

1. Preheat oven to 320 degrees Fahrenheit

Prepare a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan with butter and flour. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.

2. With an electric mixer on medium speed or in a food processor fitted with a metal blade, beat the butter until softened. Slowly add the sugar and beat the mixture until it is light, thick, and lemon colored. Add the eggs, vanilla and zest and beat until incorporated.

Slowly add the flour mixture, alternating with the milk and lemon juice until just incorporated.

3. Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 45 minutes or until a wooden skewer comes out clean and the top is nicely browned. Cool for 10 minutes and then invert onto a cake rack which has been placed on top of waxed paper.

4. While the cake is baking prepare the glaze: In  a medium bowl combine the powdered sugar and lime juice and mix until the sugar has dissolved and the glaze is smooth with no sugar lumps.

5. Soon the glaze over the cake in a pretty pattern. Place on a serving plate with a bowl of your favorite berries or fresh fruit and lemon curd if desired.

United Hospice’s Walk to Remember

The United Hospice Walk to Remember is Sunday, May 17 at Rockland Lake State Park! Part fundraiser and part memorial, the Walk to Remember is designed to give families the opportunity to remember loved ones who have passed while raising funds and awareness for the work of United Hospice.

You can register to participate as an individual or as part of a team – and if you cannot attend you can still make a donation! Each participant is asked to contribute $35 to register. If you increase your registration fee to $55, you can request a commemorative t-shirt with this year’s unique design. Once you are signed up, you can encourage others to make a gift to support your walk. The team that raises the most support wins a trophy! You can reach out to friends, family, neighbors, colleagues, even local businesses where you live and shop.

Sponsorship opportunities beginning at $250 are also available – with signage and other ways to promote your largesse and support for the vital services of United Hospice for our Orange and Rockland communities.

The walk itself is 3.2 miles along a paved path around the beautiful Rockland Lake. The event will take place rain or shine so please dress for the weather. Check-in and T-shirt pick-up begins at 8:00 am, with the program starting 8:45.

They’d love for you, your family and friends to join us as we celebrate life and honor the memory of those we hold close to our hearts – even though they are not physically with us.

5K to Farm (and Back!) in Chestnut Ridge

On Saturday, May 9, families from across New York and New Jersey will gather at the Threefold campus in Chestnut Ridge for the annual Otto Specht School 5K Run/Walk, the school’s largest community fundraising event of the year.

The event brings together students, families, educators, and elected officials to support Otto Specht School, which provides a nature-based therapeutic education program for neurodiverse learners. The race welcomes participants of all ages and abilities and celebrates the power of community to support inclusive education.

Otto Specht School serves students who often struggle in traditional educational environments – many of whom are Autistic, or have learning, behavioral, and/or developmental disabilities – by offering individualized academic instruction alongside therapeutic support. Many families travel significant distances so their children can access the school’s unique approach.

Participants will run or walk a scenic course through the Threefold campus, with students and families cheering along the route. There will also be a joyful post-race celebration with music, food, and activities. Proceeds from the event support Otto Specht School’s tuition assistance program to ensure that all students in need have access to this exceptional education.

This event will take place on Saturday, May 9th, with warm-up at 9:00 a.m. and the race beginning at 10:00 a.m. The meting loacation is Threefold Campus, Chestnut Ridge, NY

Rockland Repair Café

Residents Can Bring Broken Items to be Fixed for Free!

Rockland County Executive Ed Day today announced that the next Rockland Repair Café will be held Saturday, May 2nd, from 10 AM to 2:00 PM at the Street Community Center, 31 Zukor Road, New City.

The event pairs skilled volunteer Repair Coaches with residents who bring in broken household items for free evaluation and repair. Participants are welcome to bring items such as lamps, clothing, small appliances, wooden pieces, furniture, toys, digital devices, and electronics.

“The ability to fix and repair items is becoming a lost art,” said County Executive Ed Day. “The Repair Café not only celebrates this essential skill but also encourages its transfer to the younger generation. Events like this reduce landfill waste, foster sustainability, and strengthen our community connections.”

Repair Coaches will assess and repair items at no cost, provided the necessary materials are available. These talented volunteers are eager to share their knowledge and skills, keeping repair traditions alive and promoting sustainable living.

Please note: items powered by gas engines—such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, and other gas-powered equipment—cannot be repaired at this event.

For more information, or to confirm if a Repair Coach can fix your item, please e-mail Kathy Galione at or rocklandrepaircafe@co.rockland.ny.us or call (845) 364-2932.

The Rockland Repair Café is a free event made possible through the support of the Rockland Conservation & Service Corps, a program of the Rockland County Youth Bureau, in partnership with Rockland Green, and the Town of Clarkstown. Volunteer Repair Coaches from Woodcraft & Willow, Rockland BOCES C-TEC, and IBEW Local 363 will also participate.

RCC Celebrates Sixth Annual Unity in Community Festival

Rockland Community College is hosting the sixth annual Unity in Community: Rising as One Festival 2026. Running now through May 5, the festival features a range of events and activities that highlight and honor the collaboration, passion, and compassion that strengthen RCC’s community spirit.

“I am honored to witness the incredible support and enthusiasm from our RCC community,” said Professor Patricia Maloney-Titland, Unity in Community Founder  Co-Chair and Dean of the School of Arts, Education, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

She added, “This event would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of the organizing committee, whose tireless efforts have brought our vision to life. Together, we look forward to inspiring connections and fostering a sense of belonging for all who attend. The concept of Unity in Community was born in 2021 through the vision of Professor Maloney-Titland. Today, the college upholds her vision, fostering a celebration that brings together colleagues and students to share empowering stories and journeys, shaping and uniting our proud legacy. Unity in Community includes theatrical performances, food festivals, discussions of historical events, and more. Events and activities will also highlight the creativity of RCC students, faculty, staff, and the community.

The Unity in Community Festival exemplifies Rockland Community College’s spirit, said Dr. William Mullaney, President of Rockland Community College. "We celebrate our achievements and honor all members of the RCC community: students, faculty, staff, and partners. Our unity and shared commitment are our greatest strengths. Together, we foster an inclusive and vibrant campus community.

This year’s event kicked off with the 17th Annual Early Childhood Transitions Conference, which brought together over 50 local educators to share strategies for helping young children move between early education settings, while highlighting RCC’s campus and Teacher Education classroom.

The second event of the day, Drug and Mental Health Awareness Day, invited Rockland County high school students to actively participate in programs addressing public health issues affecting young adults. Through expert-led sessions, students engage with topics including substance use, marijuana legalization, and underage drinking.

The festival concludes with an Employee Recognition Barbecue dedicated to celebrating employees commitment and achievements. Employees celebrating milestone service anniversaries in 2025, from 10 to 40 years in five-year increments, will be recognized. SUNY Chancellor’s Award winners will also be honored for their achievements and contributions to the College. This afternoon of celebration brings the community together to mark the festival’s success.
