Greetings Jon. May I request an appraisal and more information regarding the age, style and potential value of this fancy antique table that has been in my family for several generations. My great grandfather was an executive with the Pennsylvania Railroad, and he was the individual that initially bought it. Unfortunately, our children have no interest in it at all. We have offered it to each one and there was a definite no thank you from each one. I really don’t want to part with it, but I am left with no other choice, as I am downsizing into a smaller home. Thank you for your anticipated assistance.
I understand this is a family piece that doesn’t fit with the next generation’s home. As you might be aware, the market for brown furniture has shifted. Each week I must receive four to five appraisal questions relating to furniture. Most, if not all have minimal value. However, there are exceptions, and the piece you are making inquiry about is certainly one of those exceptions. You are in possession of an important Louis XV Style Ormolu-Mounted Console Table, French circa 1900. It was produced by Francois Linke (1855-1946). I know this because in one of your photographs I was able to see an FL stamp within an oval. This mark makes a huge difference in terms of value and desirability. Francois Linke was a leading Parisian furniture maker of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He revolutionized late 19th-century furniture by blending the elegance of Louis XV and Louis XVI forms with the fluid naturalism of the Art Nouveau period. His triumph and I will call it a triumph, at the 1900 Exposition Universelle where he was awarded the gold medal secured his reputation as the preeminent maker of luxurious furniture for the world’s elite. The console table in question features a shaped Violette marble top that rests above an elegant frieze centered by an elaborate scallop shell, flanked by four finely modeled female espagnolettes. The shaped apron is raised on cabriole legs joined by a shaped X-form stretcher, surmounted by a gilt bronze figure of a man holding a mandolin. These mounts display the refined modeling, fluid lines and rich gilding characteristic of Linkee’s most accomplished work. In my opinion, your magnificent console epitomizes the opulent artistry of Francois Linkes Belle Epoque production. It impresses me that this richly veneered kingwood console table, adorned with sculptural ormolu mounts and a luxurious Breche violette marble top, exemplifies the harmonious balance of proportion, grace and outstanding craftsmanship that defined Linkes finest creations. The current value of this Louis XV Style Console Table is $12,000 USD. Perhaps now one of your children may reconsider your offer after you share this information with them.
