100 Years of Suffern Free Library

The Suffern Free Library will be celebrating its centennial during a special weekend of festivities beginning June 12, 2026. This landmark event honors a century of continuous service, growth, and dedication to the residents of the Suffern Central School District.

The celebration will kick off on Friday, June 12, at 1:00 PM with guided tours of the Ramapo Room, the library’s local history room. At 2:00 PM, Library Board President Craig H. Long and members of the Woman’s Club of Suffern will address the public, followed by a celebratory reception. A special timeline exhibit will also be on display throughout the months of June and July.

A Legacy of Literacy

The library’s origins date back to 1924, when the Woman’s Club of Suffern purchased a lot at Lafayette and Washington Avenue to build a clubhouse. Driven by a mission to provide free library services, the organization realized its goal through the generosity of charter members Mrs. Otis H. Cutler and Mrs. David H. McConnell, wife of the founder of Avon.

The original library room opened in 1925 with a collection of 3,000 gifted books. On June 30, 1926, Suffern Free Library officially received its certificate of registration as an Association Library, beginning an unbroken century of service.

Evolution for the Future

From its humble beginnings, the library has undergone several major transformations:

1941: The library outgrew the Woman’s Club clubhouse; the dedication of the new building on Maple and Washington Ave. took place on December 7 (Pearl Harbor Day). News of the attack had not yet reached Suffern, and over 200 people attended the ceremony.

2000: The opening of the current facility on Lafayette Avenue in April expanded the library’s footprint significantly.

Today: A modern remodeling of the Adult Reference Area is currently underway to introduce private study spaces and a high-tech, hands-on Learning Lab.

“Over the years, the library has served our residents with thousands of events for all ages,” says Craig H. Long. “We continue to evolve to meet the needs of our community while staying true to the vision set forth 100 years ago.”
