PALISADES, Palisades Free Library, Book Club: Japanese Gothic

June 16th

Join our book club!  This month we’re reading Japanese Gothic by Kylie Lee Baker.  Copies will be available at the circulation desk, or borrow an e-audiobook from Libby.

In this lyrical, wildly inventive horror novel interwoven with Japanese mythology, two people living centuries apart discover a door between their worlds.

October, 2026: Lee Turner doesn’t remember how or why he killed his college roommate. The details are blurred and bloody. All he knows is he has to flee New York and go to the one place that might offer refuge—his father’s new home in Japan, a house hidden by sword ferns and wild ginger. But something is terribly wrong with the house: no animals will come near it, the bedroom window isn’t always a window, and a woman with a sword appears in the yard when night falls.

October, 1877: Sen is a young samurai in exile, hiding from the imperial soldiers in a house behind the sword ferns. A monster came home from war wearing her father’s face, but Sen would do anything to please him, even turn her sword on her own mother. She knows the soldiers will soon slaughter her whole family when she sees a terrible omen: a young foreign man who appears outside her window.

One of these people is a ghost, and one of these stories is a lie.

Something is hiding beneath the house of sword ferns, and Lee and Sen will soon wish they never unburied it.

One Game, One World: Wild World Cup Stories and the Making of a Graphic Novel

Sunday June 14, 2026 at 2:00 PM

Discover how soccer unites cultures across the globe through unforgettable World Cup moments, from a stolen trophy found by a dog to matches played during the Christmas Truce, where the game briefly transcended war and brought enemies together.

Chris will lead a trivia game drawn directly from his new book, Lionel Messi’s World Cup Triumph, bringing these stories to life.

We will also explore how Chris transformed these real events into a dynamic graphic novel.

When Chris Barish is not reading about sports or history, he’s writing about sports history. Much like the first person who ever put together the chocolate and the marshmallow, he realized that it was possible to combine his two favorite things to make an even cooler thing.

In addition to authoring graphic novels, Chris has also written award-winning campaigns for sports superstars like Aaron Judge, Joel Embiid, and Derrick Henry.

Chris currently lives in New York with his family, in a house filled with sports gear, books, instruments and lots of muddy boots.

Enjoy a taste of summer in one bite

By Diane Rossen Worthington

Kids and adults love these savory cakes that include shredded zucchini and corn kernels — two vegetables that taste like summer in one bite. Here are a few tips to make this dish a big success:

Select firm zucchini (if you want you can use yellow squash).

Make sure to salt the zucchini to remove all the excess water.

Change up the herbs with rosemary, oregano, mint or whatever you prefer.

Make sure the batter is thick and well mixed.

Use a large tablespoon if you don’t have 1/3 cup measuring cup.

Use a nonstick or cast-iron large pan for best results.

You can serve these all by themselves or topped with myriad sauces. Tzaziki, romesco, pesto or tomato-red pepper sauce are just a few ideas to consider. You also can make these four hours ahead, place on paper towels and then reheat at 325 F in an air fryer for about 8 to 10 minutes. Making these ahead will be helpful so there is no last-minute cooking, and they go nicely with any simple entree.

Zucchini Corn Cakes

Makes about 6 cakes

2 medium zucchini (about 1 pound)

Salt

1/2 cup corn kernels, (about 1 ear corn stripped)

3 tablespoons finely sliced chives

3 tablespoons finely chopped basil

2 large eggs

2 medium garlic cloves, minced

1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan-Reggiano

Zest of 1 lemon

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

2 tablespoons mild olive oil

1. Grate the zucchini using the large holes of a box grater or food processor fitted with the shredding disk. Transfer to a colander in the sink and sprinkle about a teaspoon of salt over the zucchini and mix to evenly coat. Let sit in the sink for 20 to 30 minutes. Wrap the zucchini in cheesecloth or a clean kitchen towel and squeeze to remove all the excess liquid over the sink. Set aside.

2. Combine the corn, chives, basil, eggs, cheese, zest, salt and pepper, flour and baking powder in a medium bowl and whisk together until nicely blended. Add the reserved zucchini to the mixture and stir with a fork until the shredded zucchini is evenly mixed together.

3. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large nonstick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot, drop 1/3-cup portions of batter into the pan, leaving space between the cakes. Cook three cakes at a time, then repeat with the remaining oil and batter. Cook for about 3 minutes on the first side and 2 minutes on the second, watching carefully so they do not burn.

4. Reduce the heat if they brown too quickly. Transfer the cooked cakes to paper towels to drain, and serve immediately.

Patriotic Cello Show with Alex Prizgintas

America’s democracy is based upon the freedoms of speech and religion as part of its cornerstone. This program presents Patriotism, Praise, and Protest as part of the vital fabric that weaves our differences into our distinct strength. Key hymns, noble anthems of patriotism, and tunes of solidarity and resistance make this a worthy program celebrating our union. This unique sound, provided by Alex Prizgintas and his amplified cello, will be part of the Suffern Free Library on Sunday, June 7th at 2:00 PM (Please register on the library website). Classically trained, he employs non-classical tools like distortion, delay, and the iconic “wah-wah” guitar pedals symbolic of 1960s Rock n’ Roll bands–all in conjunction with a looping station. Equally comfortable with intimate and stadium settings, Alex can craft his own wall-of-sound through his 1,000-watt amp. Accompanied by a narration that reveals some of the back stories of baroque, jazz, folk, and Rock n’ Roll classics, he immerses his audience in a journey through musical history.

Those familiar with Alex’s work on the cello might be surprised to learn that he graduated summa cum laude with an undergraduate degree in regional history from Marist University and a graduate degree in public administration from Marist, in addition to serving as president of the Woodbury Historical Society and town historian of Woodbury in Orange County, NY. “I tend to have two audiences: those who know me as a cellist and those who know me through my lectures on topics of regional history. My bifurcated interests certainly keep me busy developing new stories to share about our Hudson River Valley as well as expanding my concert programs that strive to keep audiences engaged, enlightened, and hopefully entertained.” To learn more and see other video samples of his music and lectures, please visit alexprizgintas.com.
