The capitalized cost is the negotiated price of the vehicle. Just like a purchase, this number is not fixed. Every dollar you negotiate off the sticker price reduces your monthly payment by a proportional amount spread across the lease term. The residual value, set by the manufacturer’s finance company, determines how much of the vehicle’s depreciation you are covering. A vehicle expected to retain 58% of its value after 36 months will cost less to lease than one projected to retain only 50%, even if both start at the same MSRP.
The money factor rounds out the picture. This is the leasing equivalent of an interest rate, and it fluctuates based on manufacturer promotions, your credit profile, and sometimes even the specific trim level of the car. When a brand is pushing a particular model, the subsidized money factor can make the monthly cost dramatically lower than what you would expect based on the sticker price alone.

Insurance on premium vehicles in Westchester runs substantially higher than on mainstream models, and that cost hits every single month for the entire term.
Another common misstep is ignoring the disposition fee buried in the contract. Nearly every lease charges a fee, typically $300 to $500, when you return the vehicle at the end of the term. It is waived if you lease another vehicle from the same brand, but if you switch manufacturers, that charge is coming out of your pocket.
