With over 1,000 pre-sold memberships, the New York Sports Club (NYSC) opened it doors in Garnerville on Saturday. The opening takes place one month ahead of schedule due to the overwhelming demand of North Rocklanders who joined the club.
ย The new 26,000 square-foot facility features a wide variety of strength training and cardiovascular equipment, a lap pool, a cardio studio, a cycling studio, two saunas, kidsโ fitness program and babysitting services. The club also offers personal training and an array of exercise classes including cardio kickboxing, cycling, Pilates, yoga and Zumba.
“We put a lot of time, money and energy into the creating an environment where members can meet their fitness goals,โ said Jason Reyes, personal fitness manager. “The experience you will have here will be drastically different versus other facilities in the area.โ
Reyes said the clubโs modern technology is one of the features that sets the Garnerville location apart from the competition. The club has an energy management system, which allows temperatures and lighting to be remotely controlled in different areas of the club. Cardio machines, such as treadmills and ellipticals, are equipped with a personal entertainment system called Sports Club Active Network or SCAN. This system allows members to track their fitness progress, watch television, listen to music and dock their iPods or iPhones during workouts.
The spacious cardio studio is nearly fully mirrored and has hardwood floors made of bamboo. “When youโre doing step classes or plyometric classes, the surface that youโre on makes a lot of difference in how you feel afterwards,โ said Reyes.
The club has two main types of membership. The core membership gives members unlimited access to the Garnerville location. The passport membership allows unlimited use of any NYSC location. The regular rate for a core membership is $69 per month. ย During the pre-sale period, the core membership was on sale for $49 per month. Currently, the promotional rate for core membership is $55 per month, which runs through the end of October.
“NYSC Garnerville is our first location to open in over two years,โ noted Bob Giardina, CEO of New York Sports Clubs. “It’s the first NYSC in Rockland County to offer so many exercise options under one roof.โ
The facility is also the health club’s first in the North Rockland area and is its third location in Rockland County, the other locations being in Nanuet and West Nyack. “Withย ย over 100 clubs in the New York area, we know where our members live and work. ย One area of the New York market where we had had requests was in the Garnerville area,โ said Lisa Hufcut, Director of Public Relations.
“The clubโs location is a big key to its success,โ said Daryl Kallenberg, Garnerville General Manager. ย “Itโs located in a central area where local residents shop. Itโs visible from the highway and the view of the Hudson River from the cardio floor is unparalleled. We couldnโt have picked a better location.โ
Members are equally excited about the grand opening. “Opening Day was a huge success,โ said Kallenberg. ย “Members were waiting outside for us to open. The club was busy from opening to closing. A lot of the members knew each other. The atmosphere was energetic and had a family feel to it. It was just an overall great day with lots of excitement.โ
Jim Raukohl, of Garnerville, was one of many who joined the gym in the pre-sale phase. Aside from this being his first-ever gym membership, he said, “This is the first time Iโve been in a gym since high school. I like this facility because itโs clean, the equipment is all state of the art, the pool has a great temperature and itโs close to home.โ
“I hope to accomplish overall better fitness and not get tired after swimming four laps in the pool,โ Raukohl added.
Pomona resident, Antonia Smith said, “North Rockland definitely needed something like this because there were no gyms here.โ Smith was previously a member of Planet Fitness in Airmont, but decided to cancel her membership when NYSC opened. While Planet Fitnessโ membership is cheaper, Smith said, “The pool and the location immediately sold me. The exercise equipment is much better so it is worth the extra expense.โ ย Smith said her fitness goal is lose weight and maintain it.
The club is located at 20 West Ramapo Road in Garnerville. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. โ 10 p.m.; Friday, 5 a.m. โ 9 p.m. ย Weekend hours are 7 a.m. โ 7 p.m. New York Sports Club is owned by Town Sports International Holdings, Inc, which owns and operates over 150 fitness clubs including 106 New York Sports Clubs, 25 Boston Sports Clubs, 18 Washington Sports Clubs and six Philadelphia Sports Clubs.
