TOXIC SITE TO BE STUDIED IN WEST HAVERSTRAW

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will soon start a detailed environmental study at Temco Uniforms, a superfund site located at 29 Samsondale Ave, West Haverstraw, NY located in Rockland County.

The inactive hazardous waste site where this study will be held is listed as a Class “2” site in the State Registry of Inactive Hazardous Waste Sites, which is considered a significant threat to public health or the environment. A “Remedial Investigation Work Plan” was submitted to the NYSDEC under New York’s State Superfund Program.

The study will allow the NYSDEC to evaluate the conditions on and off site, if appropriate. The specific objectives of the site investigation are to determine the cause and extent of contamination in the soil, surface water, ground water, and other environmental entities that might experience contamination, determine how it will impact public health and the environment, and provide information to determine a solution for the contamination.

After the study is performed, a summary of the information collected will be provided in a report. The next step is a “Feasibility Study” which develops and explores ways to clean up the contamination of the site. Then the NYSDEC will provide a draft cleanup plan called a “Proposed Remedial Action Plan.”

This plan provides the best way the NYSDEC thinks would be the best ways to remedy the contamination. The draft is presented to the public for review and comment for 30 days, with a public meeting held.
