Celebrate Rowing on Rockland Lake Memorial Day Weekend

Looking for something different to do this Memorial Day weekend? How about watching rowing races on Rockland Lake or trying a hand at rowing yourself? This Saturday River Rowing Association will host its annual Directors’ Cup Regatta on Rockland Lake from 8-11 a.m., followed by awards, a picnic lunch, and from 1-4 p.m. FREE Learn-to-Row lessons for those 12 and up.

“We’ve recently discovered that there were rowing regattas on Rockland Lake as far back as 1885, with races between Piermont and Nyack rowing clubs,” explained RRA president, Ivan Rudolph-Shabinsky, “It’s fun to know that we’re maintaining a tradition of rowing on Rockland Lake and we hope lots of folks come out and join us.”

The races can be viewed from anywhere along the lake but sign up for a free lesson or register for RRA’s summer and fall programs at Lot 6. There are a limited number of lessons available, so come early, sign up for a free lesson and stay to enjoy the races! Athletes from Nyack, Pearl River, Clarkstown North and South, Nanuet, and Tappan Zee high schools as well as high school athletes from New Jersey and Westchester comprise the RRA Junior Competitive team. You can watch them compete this Saturday against the RRA Masters rowers for the coveted Directors Cup and cheer for your favorite boats!
