In a surprise move, the Upper Nyack Village Board announced last week it will disband its Village Court, transferring responsibilities to Clarkstown’s Town Court.
The move, which will take place in one year, was made due to rising costs of maintaining court operations and security and a need to consolidate governmental services. The Upper Nyack Village Board also voted to eliminate the position of Village Judge.
The court handles legal violations, misdemeanors and all criminal arraignments within the village. It also handles civil matters such as building and zoning violations.
Clarkstown officials stated they had no foreknowledge until the decision was made by the board. Clarkstown Supervisor Alex Gromack and Town Board Member Frank Borelli both said the town was taking steps to determine how to best incorporate Upper Nyack’s court operations into those of the Clarkstown Town Court.
