Senator Carlucci & Rockland Sheriff Lou Falco Take on Drunk Driving

Lawmaker and sheriff support three strikes and you’re out law for repeat DUI offenders

NEW CITY- Under current law the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles may restore driving privileges after five years, no matter how many DUIs (Driving Under the Influence) a driver receives. Senator Carlucci joined Rockland Sheriff Lou Falco to support a piece of legislation that will close this dangerous loophole.

Senator Carlucci said, “This sends the wrong message to persistent offenders and to the public at large. We need to make sure that people who are repeat offenders, who have reckless disregard for the safety of pedestrians and other drivers by continuing to drive under the influence after their second DUI conviction, are taken off the roads permanently.”

The Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research issued a report indicating that approximately 21.6 percent of convicted drunk drivers in New York will re-offend and suffer a subsequent conviction. As some of the most dangerous drivers on our roads, this tendency of convicted DUI offenders to re-offend significantly increases the likelihood that their driving drunk will result in serious injuries or death to innocent victims.

Rockland Sheriff Lou Falco said, “This common sense law will help keep our roads safe. Studies continue to show that drunk drivers will keep re-offending. Having a three strike system will illustrate to offenders that there will be serious consequences to putting the public at risk.”
