Shelter teams with Homes for Heroes on site of former Camp Shanks
PRESS RELEASE
The dogs, cats and rabbits at Rockland County’s animal shelter will finally have a home on their own land.
Hi Tor Animal Shelter has announced that it will build its long-needed new shelter on the site of the former Camp Shanks in Tappan, NY.
Hi Tor is working on the project with Homes for Heroes, an organization that provides permanent, supportive and affordable rental housing for homeless, service disabled veterans and their families on the site.
Homes for Heroes has invited Hi Tor to use property that is not suitable for veterans’ residences. In return for sharing the property, Hi Tor will try to employ the veterans living there and will create a military service dog training program.
“We are thrilled to be working with Homes for Heroes and delighted that we can finally begin work on the best possible shelter for our animals,” said Sharon Needelman, president of the Hi Tor board. “Our goal is to create a fabulous, safe and healthy environment for pets and people.”
“As we apply for ownership of the property, we must account for the uses of the land,” said John Murphy, president of Homes for Heroes. “Since one of the acceptable uses is an animal shelter, Hi Tor is a perfect match.”
