Spectator: PRAY BALL!

About this time every year, I dust off a column that I wrote many years ago for the paper. In fact it appeared on July 11, 1985. Some of you werenโ€™t even born yet! Iโ€™ve added to it from time to time and with the baseball season about to open, I thought it would be timely.

While perusing the Bible one day from Genesis to Revelation, the idea occurred to me, โ€œWhy not a column about the Bible and baseball!โ€

Here my friends are actual passages from the Bible that have some relation to our national pastime โ€“ baseball. Iโ€™m sure you can come up with a few more.

โ€œAnd he will be a wild man.โ€ Genesis 15:22

โ€œHis right hand and arm have brought victory.โ€ Psalm 98

โ€œTurn to me and be safe.โ€ Isaiah 45

โ€œBy myself, I swear.โ€ Isaiah 46

โ€œMy strength was dried up by the summer heat.โ€ Psalm 32

Howโ€™s this passage for the third base coach: โ€œI will give you counsel with my eyes upon you.โ€ Psalm 33

โ€œGo home!โ€ Matthew 2:11

โ€œGet up!โ€ Matthew 2:13

โ€œEnter through the narrow gate.โ€ Matthew 7:13

โ€œThe rains fell โ€“ the torrents came.โ€ Matthew 7:27

โ€œWe are lost!โ€ Matthew 8:25

โ€œOut with you!โ€ Matthew 8:32

โ€œStand up and walk.โ€ Matthew 9:5

โ€œShake the dust from your feet.โ€ Matthew 10:14

โ€œPlay loudly with all your skill.โ€ Psalm 33

โ€œCut it off and throw it!โ€ Matthew 18:8

When owners get together: โ€œSold for next to nothing.โ€ Matthew 10:29

โ€œStretch out your hand.โ€ Matthew 12:13

โ€œWork some signs.โ€ Matthew 12:38

โ€œHe went and took his seat.โ€ Matthew 13:2

โ€œDismiss the crowd.โ€ Matthew 14:15

โ€œAll the people clap your hands.โ€ Psalm 47

โ€œStrike up the instruments.โ€ Judith 16

โ€œYour saving help has given him glory.โ€ Psalm 21

Was Matthew referring to the steroid scandal when he wrote this line: โ€œIt is inevitable that scandal should occur.โ€ Matthew 18:7

โ€œYou are trying to make me trip and fall.โ€ Matthew 17:13

Canโ€™t you just hear an umpire uttering the next one: โ€œWho is this man who utters blasphemies?โ€ Luke 5:21

How about this line for relief pitchers: โ€œYour saving help has given Him glory.โ€ Psalm 21

Was Matthew referring to umpires when he wrote this: โ€œBlind fools!โ€ Matthew 20:4

โ€œYou shall not steal.โ€ Matthew 19:18

โ€œThey have reason to fear the crowd.โ€ Matthew 21:46

This might refer to one of those extra, extra inning games: โ€œThe night is far spent, the day draws near.โ€ Romans 13:11-14

โ€œWe need a sacrifice.โ€ 1 Kings

โ€œIf a man is in the field he must not turn back.โ€ Matthew 24:18

โ€œThe spectators are shouting aloud.โ€ Acts 17:57

โ€œThey were running side by side.โ€ John 20:4

Could this refer to last yearโ€™s disaster by the Mets: โ€œThey go out, they go out full of tears.โ€ Psalm 126

How about this describing a runner leading off first base: โ€œHe crouches, preparing to spring.โ€ Psalm 10

โ€œI find no fault with your sacrifice.โ€ Psalm 145

Is this a reference to the scoreboards? โ€œShow them a sign in the sky.โ€ Matthew 16:1

Could this be Yankee owner: โ€œI will pay you whatever is fair.โ€ Matthew 20:4

How about this line for wives of husbands who are baseball fanatics: โ€œYou wives must adapt yourselves to your husbands.โ€ Ephesians 5:22

There you have it. Everything but the peanuts, hot dogs, and Cracker Jacks. Those youโ€™ll have to provide on your own.

Play ball! Or should I say Pray ball!
