Cuomo Claims to be the Best

On Tuesday, April 3 New York Governor Andrew Cuomo claimed to be the most accomplished governor in modern history during an interview with NY1 Tuesday. Cuomo told โ€œInside City Hallโ€ host Errol Louis, โ€œYou take my record of accomplishment, you compare it to any Governor in modern history and I think you will see that we have done more.โ€ Heโ€™s currently seen as a a top contender for the 2020 election. Actress Cynthia Nixon, from Sex and the City, has claimed she will be running for governor.

Caravan Comes Near U.S.-Mexico Border

A caravan of primarily Honduran migrants is slowly approaching the U.S.-Mexican border. More than a thousand migrants have traveled from Central America through to the border, in hopes of seeing refuge. President Donald Trump tweeted about the caravan claiming, โ€œthe big Caravan of People from Honduras, now coming across Mexico and heading to our โ€˜Weak Lawsโ€™ Border, had better be stopped before it gets there.โ€ The annual march from Central America to the border is led by Pueblo Sin Fronteras, or People Without Borders, a group hoping to publicize the dangerous conditions of life in Central America. Trump claims some of the migrants might be criminals pretending to be asylum seekers to get into the U.S.

China Proposes Soybean Tax in Response to Trump Tariffs

On Tuesday April 4, the Trump Administration published a list of approximately 1,300 Chinese exports targeted for tariffs. The 25% tariff, viewed as a punishment for the Chinese theft of trade secrets would be applied to all products. Most of the list consists of aerospace, tech and machinery industries as well as medical equipment, medicine and educational materials including bookbindings. A member from the Chinese embassy in the U.S. said, โ€œit is only polite to reciprocate.โ€œ A public hearing will be held for the tariffs on May 15. China has proposed a 25% tax on U.S. soybean imports in response to the Trump tariff. โ€œThe U.S. Soy industry has a 36-year track record of actively investing and partnering in programs that support Chinaโ€™s goals of achieving sustainable food security and food safety,โ€ according to USSEC Chair Derek Haigwood, a soybean farmer from Arkansas.

Jersey Mikeโ€™s Subs Opens in Nanuet with Fundraiser

Rocklandโ€™s first Jersey Mikeโ€™s Subs opened on Wednesday April 4 with a fundraiser to benefit Nanuet High School. The franchise owners are running a promotion through April 8 to give customers a free regular sub with a minimum $2 donation to the school. Shop owners Anthony Belasco and Jonathan Valencia are excited to give back to the community. โ€œSupporting the Nanuet High School during our grand opening is a wonderful way to give back to the community,โ€ Belasco said. The Nanuet location is at 191 W. Route 59 near Fortune Garden, across Route 59 from Red Lobster.

Police Kill Black Man in Brooklyn

According to the Daily News, NYPD cops fatally shot a mentally troubled black man in Brooklyn Wednesday afternoon. Police claim the man aimed a metal pipe at them. No weapons were found at the scene where officers responded to three 911 calls around 4:40 p.m. The calls mentioned a black man wearing a brown leather jacket waiving a silver gun. The victim, Saheed Vassell, 34, was shot multiple times by four offices, one in uniform, three plainclothes in Crown Heights. None of the officers were waring body cameras. Vassell died at Kings County Hospital.

Sex in the City Star to Run for Governor Spot in 2020

Actress Cynthia Nixon, former star of Sex in the City, plans to run for New York Governor in 2020. If elected, Nixon, 51, would legalize and tax marijuana to capture the revenue. She also believes New York missed out on a crucial moment to enact new gun control measures after the recent mass shootings. Nixon believes New York has good gun laws but could do more by banning bump-stock devices. During an interview with Wendy Williams she talked about Stephon Clark, the unarmed 22-year-old black man who was shot eight times in his grandmotherโ€™s backyard in California. โ€œIf weโ€™re going to say black lives matter, we have to mean it,โ€œ she said, โ€œand we have to implement change.โ€œ Nixon acknowledged her challenge against Cuomo and believes that he too was a celebrity eight years ago when he ran because he was the son of former Governor Mario Cuomo.
