Two charged with tearing down Israeli flag from Ramapo Town Hall

Two people have been arrested in connection with the removal and desecration of an Israeli flag hanging from the exterior wall of the Town of Ramapo building on Route 59 in Suffern.

Two men were arrested on Tuesday, November 14, the day after the incident was reported. The investigation revealed a group of people had torn the flag down, damaging it in the process and leaving with it.

The Ramapo Police Investigations Unit was able to identify those involved and arrested two people so far.

Alter Goldberger, 75, of Monroe was arrested and charged with criminal mischief as a hate crime, petit larceny as a hate crime, and conspiracy.

He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance pending a future court appearance.

Yehonatan Ovadia, 32, of Chestnut Ridge, was also arrested and charged with the hate crimes of criminal mischief, petit larceny and conspiracy.

He was also released on his own recognizance.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and Ramapo Police ask anyone with information to contact them at 845-357-2400.
