Senator Bill Weber Signs Letter To Governor Hochul Calling For Removal of NYC D.A.

In the aftermath of the attack of two NYC police officers, Rockland representative Senator Bill Weber (R) joined his Senate Republican colleagues in signing a letter to Governor Hochul calling on her to exercise her power to remove District Attorney Alvin Bragg from office.

The text of the letter, which was endorsed by 20 senators, including Minority Leader Robert Ortt, has been published below:

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Braggโ€™s unconscionable handling of the recent attack on two NYPD officers by
a gang of migrants outside of a Times Square shelter must be the final straw. The public safety of New Yorkers is clearly at risk. We urgently ask you to exercise your power under the State Constitution and the Public Officers Law to remove District Attorney Alvin Bragg from office.

Police report that a video capturing the attack shows that as many as twelve men may have been involved in attacking the two officers. It is inarguable that these attackers should have been held in custody. And yet, as of the date of this letter, seven suspects have been arrested by police and DA Braggโ€™s office has let six of them waltz out of court after being released without bail. Several of these individuals were seen laughing and making obscene gestures as they left the courthouse, seeming to have not a care in the world. It has now been reported that four of these released individuals are believed to have boarded a bus bound for California. In addition, there are more suspects at play that are currently being investigated by the NYPD.

From the moment he took office, DA Bragg has thumbed his nose at crime victims, turned his back on the police and has selectively prosecuted criminals for political reasons only. His incredibly poor judgment is matched only by his unwillingness to take criminals off the streets.

It is clear that DA Bragg has no interest in prosecuting criminals and no desire to support law enforcement, which in turn, makes New Yorkers less safe. We need a District Attorney that will enforce the law and do what is necessary to not only get the criminals off the streets, but also send the message that lawlessness will not be tolerated.

DA Bragg is failing at performing the basic duties of his position, and for the safety of all New Yorkers, you must remove him from the office of Manhattan District Attorney immediately.

Thank you for your attention to this critically important manner.
