Orangetown & The Bicentennial 1776 -1976! From Democracy to Disco

Don’t miss the Orangetown Historical Museum & Archive’s ongoing exhibition, Orangetown & The Bicentennial 1776 to 1976! From Democracy to Disco. Tuesdays & Fridays 10AM-2PM. Sunday 1PM-4PM.  FREE admission.

In 1976 America was set to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence – and Orangetown was ready. With significant revolutionary roots – from the signing of the Orangetown Resolutions, Washington’s headquarters at the DeWint House, Molly Sneden’s ferry, Maj. John Andre’s trial and hanging to Sir Guy Carlton’s tribute to the new republic- Orangetown was were where history happened. The Bicentennial provided Americans with a way to honor the past and prepare for the future while taking a break form the Vietnam War Watergate scandal and cultural upheavals of the previous decade. Hopes and dreams for a better society suffered many setbacks in the 70’s, but the American dream continued.  As we prepare for the nation’s Semiquincentennial – the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, looking back From Democracy to Disco can serve as a blueprint for the future.

Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) provides checks through the Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) (845-364-2577).

Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) coupons are available to eligible low-income older adults (aged 60 and above) who live in New York State. For eligibility information, call the Rockland County Office for the Aging at (845) 364-2100.

Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program (SNAP) and Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) help low-income working individuals, senior citizens, people with disabilities, and others afford healthy food for their families.  Monthly benefits are issued through an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, similar to a bank debit card or credit card, that can be used to purchase food at authorized retail food stores and farmers’ markets.

Fresh Connect Program Checks (FCC) are offered to active-duty members, veterans, and their immediate family members, as well as un-remarried surviving spouses of veterans, for fresh produce and other food items at participating farmers’ markets throughout New York State.

Furry Friend of the Week: Yoko

After 3 years in a cage, our Shelter Manager asked if we could take Yoko to the Foster House where she could finally have some space to stretch, stroll about, look outside a window.  Yoko had an unhappy, grumpy attitude about her, HOWEVER, that’s all changed now.  Yoko is ready to meet her forever family.  Her best match would be a family that is low activity, a couch potato existence would be ideal!  She loves to head bump, leg bump, then may turn her tail to investigate a new paper bag, leaving behind the humans she has tired of or no longer deems worthy of her attention.  She really is a sweetheart though.  Yoko is NOT at the shelter, please contact Nixie at gentlesouls@aol.com for more information or to schedule a meet and greet.  THANK YOU!
